Akita Inu

Akita Inu

The Akita Inu comes from Japan and was originally bred there mainly as a hunting dog. The FCI classifies the Akita Inu in group 5. This large dog breed has a pronounced hunting instinct, but usually proves to be extremely faithful and loyal to its owner.

Characteristics of the Akita Inu

The weight of the Akita Inu is usually between 35 and 40 kilograms. The height at the withers should be approximately 67 centimetres in males and 61 centimetres in females, with a tolerance of three centimetres in both directions.

The Akita Inu has a strong physique and a compact head with medium muzzle and pronounced stop. Its tail is bushy and is carried rolled up. The ears of the Akita Inu are slightly rounded, triangular and slightly forward. The eyes are almond-shaped.

The Akita Inu has a hard, straight top coat with a soft and dense undercoat. The coat is either white, red, sesame or tabby, with white markings on the legs, chest, head and underside of tail and belly.

The life expectancy of this race lies between 10 and 15 years.

Akita Inu character

Akita Inu character

The Akita Inu is intelligent and is characterized by a strong personality and a strong will.

Due to his dominant nature he likes to make his own decisions instead of blindly obeying his owner. If he gets the necessary attention and is well guided, the Akita Inu is nevertheless extremely loyal and faithful to his master.

Originally the Akita Inu was used as a hunting dog (e.g. for bear hunting) and as a draft and guard dog. This breed still has its distinctive hunting instinct. Owners of an Akita Inu should therefore be prepared to satisfy it in some way. A suitable dog sport would be possible for this purpose.

In general, the Akita Inu prefers a quiet environment and can do without contact with other dogs very well.

Activities with the Akita Inu

The Akita Inu is a robust and strong character working dog. Among other things, it is very suitable as a guide dog.

The combination of thick fur, strength and health make the Akita Inu an excellent sled dog.

He also loves prey games and long walks. However, it is usually not necessary to fully utilize the Akita Inu at all times.

If you want to do dog sports with an Akita Inu, you could, for example, choose one of the following sports:

  • Dogdancing
  • dog trekking

Akita Inu Diseases

Even though the Akita Inu is a very healthy and robust dog breed, there are unfortunately two diseases that can occur more often.

Diseases that are typical for the Akita Inu:

  • Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada Syndrome (VKH): An autoimmune disease that can cause damage to the eyes and depigmentation of the skin.
  • Sebadenitis: This disease destroys the sebaceous glands in the dog's skin and also leads to hair loss.

Large dog breeds like the Akita Inu also tend to get so-called recumbent calluses.

Akita Inu Food

The Akita Inu should receive a special food that is exactly adapted to its needs. Various factors such as weight, age and sports activities should be taken into account.

A dog food with natural ingredients guarantees a good tolerance and an optimal nutrient supply of the Akita Inu.

In addition, a dietary supplement with Bellfor Haut & Fell (Skin & Coat) is recommended to support skin and coat health.

If your dog develops calluses, we recommend treating them with a combination of Bellfor Paw Protection Ointment and Haut & Fell (Skin & Coat).

The Bellfor nutrition concept supports the healthy development of your Akita Inu from an early age.
