Are dogs allowed to eat potatoes?

Dürfen Hunde Kartoffeln essen?

To avoid digestive problems, dogs should not eat cereals if possible. Gluten-containing varieties such as wheat can sometimes cause very unpleasant digestive problems and promote the development of food allergies.

But what about potatoes? Are dogs allowed to eat potatoes or can they cause similar problems to wheat? We’ll give the answer to this question below.

Can dogs eat cooked potatoes?

Dogs are semi-carnivores. In addition to an adequate amount of animal proteins and fats, their diet should also include a certain amount of plant food. Among other things, plant foods provide your four-legged friend with energy in the form of carbohydrates.

Cooked potatoes are very suitable for this purpose. Unlike gluten-containing cereals, potatoes are usually tolerated by dogs without any problems.

In addition to digestible carbohydrates, potatoes also contain a number of vitamins and minerals. These include various B vitamins, vitamin C, iron, magnesium and phosphorus. These tubers, which originated in South America, are therefore an excellent source of various valuable nutrients not only for humans but also for dogs.

Of course, this does not mean that you should feed your four-legged friend only potatoes. After all, he needs a sufficient amount of animal proteins and fats to meet his dietary needs. But provided your dog likes them and you otherwise pay attention to a species-appropriate diet, there is nothing to stop you from letting your dog eat cooked potatoes from time to time.

Can dogs eat raw potatoes?

While dogs can eat cooked potatoes without hesitation, raw potatoes have no place in a dog's food bowl. This is because they contain the chemical compound solanine, which can cause  vomiting, diarrhoea and other symptoms in your dog.

Depending on the weight of the animal, even a small amount of a raw potato is enough to cause symptoms of poisoning. Dogs should therefore never eat raw potatoes, and you yourself should also avoid them because of the solanine.

Are dogs allowed to eat mashed potatoes?

In principle, dogs are allowed to eat mashed potatoes, as they consist of cooked potato. However, keep in mind that dogs are lactose intolerant and milk or butter, if used, often causes them digestive problems. If you want your dog to eat mashed potatoes, the dish should ideally consist of mashed potatoes only.

Can dogs eat sweet potatoes?

What applies to normal potatoes alsoapplies to sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes are particularly rich inmicronutrients and may also be eaten by dogs. However, they also contain morecarbohydrates and sugar, which you should take into account with the amount yougive your four-legged friend.

As they do not contain solanine, they can theoretically even be eaten raw. However, in order for your dog to digest these starchy vegetables as well as possible, sweet potatoes should only be eaten when cooked through.

Potatoes in Bellfor dog food

Because of the known problems that wheat can cause in dog food, we at Bellfor deliberately avoid this ingredient. Instead, we use easily digestible alternatives such as potatoes and sweet potatoes.

In this way, we can ensure that our wet and dry dog food is particularly well tolerated and, thanks to its carefully balanced recipes, can fully entice dog and owner, both in terms of taste and the nutrients it contains.

Potatoes for dogs - our conclusion

As you can see, dogs are allowed to eat potatoes as long as they have been cooked beforehand. Of course, potatoes alone are not enough to provide your dog with all the necessary nutrients. However, when cooked, there is nothing wrong with them occasionally making an appearance in your four-legged friend's food bowl.

Because of their digestibility, many varieties of our high-quality dog food also contain potatoes. Together with sweet potatoes, they both serve as a source of easily digestible carbohydrates that provide your four-legged friend with important energy and ensure that our food is particularly tasty and digestible.
