Are dogs allowed to eat kiwi?

Kiwis have long been a fixture in the fruit and vegetable section of our supermarkets. These vitamin-rich fruits are very popular with many people and some dogs are even enthusiastic about them.

But are dogs allowed to eat kiwi at all or does the fruit belong to the foods that have no place in the food bowl? We will give you the answer to this question in the following paragraphs.

Are kiwis healthy for dogs?

If you follow a balanced diet, fruit is probably a regular part of your diet. After all, fruits like kiwis are known to be rich in vitamins and are therefore excellent as a healthy snack.

However, this does not necessarily mean that dogs can eat kiwi. After all, the four-legged friends have completely different nutritional needs and some foods that are harmless for us humans can even be harmful to their health.

However, this does not apply to kiwi. Therefore, there is normally nothing wrong with letting your dog eat a piece of kiwi occasionally.

Kiwis contain many valuable nutrients

100 grams of kiwi have about 61 calories. They are rich in vitamin C and also contain folic acid, vitamin K, magnesium, calcium and potassium. They are a good source of dietary fibre also.

Provided you don't overdo it with the quantity and your dog likes it, the kiwi is therefore definitely a healthy snack that can end up in their food bowl from time to time as a small reward.

Dogs must only eat ripe kiwi

Unripe kiwis contain a relatively high amount of acid. To avoid stomach problems, your dog should therefore only eat ripe kiwis. You can recognise ripe fruit by the fact that it can be pressed in with your finger. If it is still hard, it needs to ripen for a few more days. Apart from that, the kiwi must of course be peeled before eating.

Not all dogs tolerate kiwi

Although kiwis are not harmful to dogs in principle, they are not well tolerated by all four-legged friends. The fruits have a digestive effect, which can lead to diarrhoea in some dogs. If your four-legged friend is generally susceptible in this respect, you should rather use other types of fruit.

Apart from that, dogs can be allergic to kiwi. This happens rather rarely. However, if you observe such symptoms in your four-legged friend after eating it, he should of course not eat any more kiwi in future.

Kiwi for dogs - our conclusion

As you can see, dogs are generally allowed to eat kiwi. As long as the fruits are ripe and have been peeled, most four-legged friends will tolerate them in small quantities without any problems.

However, just like other fruit, kiwis are of course not suitable as a main meal for your dog. For this purpose, you will of course need good dog food that provides your four-legged friend with all the necessary nutrients.

In our range, you will find everything you need for a species-appropriate dog diet. In addition to easily digestible wet and dry food, this also includes a large selection of tasty dog treats. These are ideal as a healthy reward for in-between meals and most dogs would rather eat these little treats than fruit like kiwis anyway.
