Are dogs allowed to eat melon?

Dürfen Hunde Melone essen?

Whether watermelons or sugar melons - melons are a popular low-calorie yet sweet-tasting snack.

But are dogs allowed to eat melon, too, or should we use other fruits when feeding our four-legged friends? We will give you the answer to this question in the following paragraphs.

Melons are low in calories and rich in nutrients

Depending on the variety, melons contain about 30 to 40 calories, which makes them a decidedly figure-friendly snack. In addition, melons naturally contain various vitamins and minerals, such as calcium, magnesium and potassium, as well as vitamin C and various B vitamins.

Can a dog eat all the melons?

There are several different types of melon, whereby a distinction is made between watermelons and sugar melons. The honeydew melon, for example, belongs to the so-called sugar melons, as does the Galia melon. The flesh of sugar melons is somewhat firmer than that of watermelons. Depending on the variety, it has a green, yellow or even orange colour, while watermelons have yellow or red flesh.

Dogs are allowed to eat all melons available in our shops. As long as the fruit is ripe and you have removed the skin, eating the flesh is safe for your four-legged friend. They do not contain any ingredients that are harmful to dogs. Only dogs with diabetes should be careful because of the high sugar content. However, this also applies to other types of fruit and is not limited to melons.

Melon aids the dog's digestion

Most dogs tolerate melon well. However, the fruit stimulates digestion and has a dehydrating effect. For this reason, you should not overdo it in terms of quantity. If you let your dog eat too much melon, it can easily lead to diarrhoea. How much of the fruit is okay for your four-legged friend in individual cases depends, of course, on the size of the dog.

It is best to try a small piece first and see if your dog tolerates melon well. If your dog has digestive problems such as diarrhoea or flatulence after eating melon, he should of course not eat any more melon in the future.

Are dogs allowed to eat the seeds of melons?

If you want your dog to eat melon, you should remove the seeds from the flesh. Unlike the seeds of many other types of fruit, they do not contain toxic prussic acid. However, at least in very small dogs, eating them can cause a life-threatening intestinal blockage. The risk may not be too great. Nevertheless, it is advisable to take the small extra effort to be on the safe side.

Melons for dogs - our conclusion

As you can see, dogs are generally allowed to eat melons. In moderation, the fruits are excellent as a refreshing snack that is readily accepted and well tolerated by most dogs.

However, melons and other types of fruit alone are of course not enough to provide your four-legged friend with the food he needs. For this purpose, you will of course need good dog food, such as you will find in the Bellfor range. Try our high-quality wet and dry food, our natural nutritional supplements or our healthy dog treats, which your dog would probably much rather eat than melons anyway.
