Cold pressed or extruded: which dry food is better?

When buying dry food for your dog you inevitably encounter the terms cold-pressed and extruded. Both say nothing about the composition of the food. Instead, they denote two different manufacturing processes.

In this article we show you the differences between the two variants. In addition, you will learn the advantages and disadvantages and learn why it is only on the basis of the manufacturing process that makes it impossible to draw conclusions about the quality of the dog food.

This is how the cold pressing process works

In the cold pressing process, the dried and ground raw materials are pressed by means of a roller by high pressure in the desired shape.

Since no additional heat is used, the processing temperature is comparatively low. Nevertheless, temperatures of around 80 degrees are still reached in the cold-pressing process.

This is how the extrusion works

During extrusion, the raw materials are also first dried and ground. As with the cold-pressing process, pressure is also used here in order to be able to press the raw materials in the form of pellets.

The ingredients are first mixed together until they have the right consistency. Then they are pressed through a nozzle and formed into pellets of the desired size. By using steam, temperatures of up to 120 degrees are reached in the extruder.

Advantages and disadvantages of both methods

Extrusion and cold pressing processes have both advantages and disadvantages.

The extrusion allows a better digestion of the nutrients contained in the feed. This should make the dry dog ​​food particularly digestible. Another advantage is the fact that germs are reliably killed thanks to the high temperatures.

At the same time, however, the high temperatures also represent a potential disadvantage. Too much heat can have a negative effect on the nutrients it contains and at least partially damage them.

For this reason, production in the cold-pressing process is generally considered to be gentler. Nutrients are best preserved and thus get where they belong - in the body of your dog.

However, cold-pressed dog food at least theoretically carries the risk of higher germ contamination.

There is no right or wrong

As you can see, there are arguments in both manufacturing processes that speak in favor and against. On the basis of the manufacturing process alone, therefore, no statement can be made regarding the quality of the feed.

Both methods can produce a good dry food that provides the dog with everything important. The prerequisite is that high-quality raw materials are used in the right composition.

For example, cereals should generally be avoided. Even artificial additives, as well as so-called animal by-products, have lost nothing in a high-quality dog ​​food.
