Constipation in dogs: causes, symptoms and treatment

Verstopfung beim Hund: Ursachen, Symptome und Behandlung

If your dog suffers from constipation, you should not take it lightly. Digestive problems can quickly have serious consequences and, in the worst case, can even cause permanent damage to the four-legged friend's intestines.

Fortunately, blockages in dogs are in many cases only temporary and can be treated quite easily. What causes the constipation in your dog can have, how you recognize it and what is necessary for the treatment, we explain to you in the following.

Constipation in your dog - what is it?

The medical term for constipation is constipation. If a dog has constipation, the emptying of the bowels and the intestinal activity of the affected four-legged friend are clearly smaller or even completely absent.

Although his body is still able to digest the ingested food, it can no longer excrete it properly. The excrement accumulates in the colon. For the dog this is connected with an inflation of his stomach and pain.

In most cases, constipation is an acute and temporary problem. However, if it occurs more frequently, it may indicate that your dog is suffering from a chronic bowel disease. For this reason, it is important that you do something about the constipation as soon as possible.

Possible causes of constipation in dogs

In order to eliminate constipation in your dog, you must first know its trigger. You should know that constipation can have many causes.

Constipation in dogs can be caused by the following factors, among others:

  • Taking strong medication
  • Pathological changes in the body (for example a malposition of the pelvis)
  • Fractures in the pelvic area
  • metabolic disorders
  • Lack of exercise (particularly common in old dogs)
  • dysfunctions of the intestine and anus
  • Feed with a low crude fibre content
  • Hard to digest food like bones
  • Foreign bodies swallowed by the dog

Symptoms of constipation in dogs

Symptoms of constipation

Constipation can be detected in dogs by a variety of symptoms. Therefore, with a little attention, you should notice quite quickly if your dog suffers from constipation.

The following symptoms are a sure sign that a dog has constipation:

  • The dog will attempt to stop droppings several times in different places without success.
  • There is very little excrement, some of which is bloody or slimy.
  • Sledging (the dog slides with his back over the ground.)
  • The belly of the four-legged is bloated and cramped.
  • The dog howls and beeps because of his pain.

As the constipation progresses, the symptoms may be compounded by fatigue, vomiting and persistent loss of appetite.

Constipation can cause permanent damage in dogs

If the constipation in the affected dog cannot be removed, it is probably a chronic problem. Because a longer lasting constipation can lead to an overstretching of the intestine (megacolon).

This causes permanent damage that cannot be cured. For the four-legged friend this means that it will have to fight in the future always with pain and problems with the excrement to settle.

Nutrition for constipation dog

In order to avoid lasting consequences for your dog, you should do something about the constipation as soon as possible. Natural "laxatives" such as flea seed shells or linseed often work wonders. Make sure that your four-legged friend has enough exercise and drinks enough water.

If there is a possibility that your dog's constipation is due to stress, you should try to reduce the stress. You should also make sure that your four-legged friend is calm and does not feel rushed when he or she stops stopping his or her faeces.

Don't give your pet bones too often and use a high-quality dog food with a sufficient amount of raw fibre to stimulate digestion. Normally, your dog's constipation should be removed quite quickly with these tips.

Wet food helps with constipation

Especially the combination of dry food and a too low fluid intake can quickly lead to blockages. A good wet food can often help in this case. This applies at least if it is a high-quality product, such as our favourite menu.

Bellfor's favourite menu contains neither artificial additives nor cereals. Instead, it provides your dog with animal fats and proteins as well as easily digestible carbohydrates.

Our wet food is therefore particularly well-tolerated and promotes the digestion of your four-legged friend in a completely natural way.

Shimmun Gastro: natural help against constipation in dogs

In addition to changing over to wet food, we recommend that you counteract constipation in your dog with Shiimun Gastro. This natural food supplement contains Shiitake mushrooms and other carefully selected ingredients such as turmeric, aniseed and sage.

This makes Shiimun Gastro ideal for promoting healthy digestion in your dog and counteracting his constipation in a digestible way.

When a dog with constipation has to go to the vet

Constipation in dogs can usually be treated quite well and quickly. If there is no improvement in time, however, you with your four-legged friend should definitely consult a veterinarian.

This can go on cause research and initiate the necessary treatment measures, so that lasting damage can hopefully be avoided and the complaints can be repaired completely.
