Dogdancing: dog sport for active quadrupeds and their owners

Dogdancing

If you are looking for a dog sport that not only challenges your active four-legged friend but also makes you sweat, Dogdancing may be perfect for you. As the name suggests, this demanding sport is all about dancing with the dog. How Dogdancing exactly works, which dogs are suitable for it and how you and your four-legged friend can start best, you will learn in the following.

In addition, we will explain why a balanced diet is so important for your dog active in Dogdancing and what you should pay attention to in this context when choosing dog food.

What is dog dancing about?

Dogdancing has its origin in obedience training, which is primarily about the obedience of the quadruped. The sport originated in the USA, where it was developed in the early 90s. Dogdancing combines elements of classical obedience with different tricks to a choreography, which is accompanied by music.

In contrast to many other dog sports, such as flyball or driftball, the owner actively participates in the action by dancing along and steering the dog by verbal or non-verbal commands.

Different forms of Dogdancing

Who decides for Dogdancing, has in principle the choice between two different forms. With the so-called Heelwork to Music, which means footwork to music, the main focus is on correct footwork.

During the choreography of this form of dogdancing 18 different foot positions have to be demonstrated, which the dog and owner can combine with different tricks like turns or jumps.

Those who value fun and movement in dogdancing can try freestyle instead. With this form practically everything is allowed. The choreographies can be put together as you wish and contain everything your dog can do, from paw work to jumps and turns.

For which dogs is Dogdancing suitable?

For which dogs is Dogdancing suitable

Basically Dogdancing is suitable for every healthy dog. Especially small breeds as well as larger four-legged friends can participate and let off steam together with their owners. However, for very heavy and large dog breeds such as the Newfoundland or the Leonberger, there are certainly better suited employment opportunities that are more in line with the needs of the animals.

After all Dogdancing requires beside head work also a certain measure of mobility and represents at the latest with somewhat more fastidious exercises a not to be underestimated load for the movement apparatus of the quadruped.

In order to be considered for participation in Dogdancing, a dog should therefore not be too heavy and above all not suffer from joint problems. Apart from that, it is of course necessary that the four-legged friend masters the most important basic commands and is well socialized towards humans and conspecifics. If these requirements are met by your dog, it is certainly worth trying out the whole thing and seeing if you enjoy training together.

How to find the right way to start with Dogdancing

Dogdancing is a demanding sport, where you should not expect miracles from your dog at the beginning. It will take a while until you have mastered the first tricks. It is therefore important that you approach slowly and do not immediately overstrain your four-legged friend.

It is best to start off playfully by turning on music at home and rehearsing simple exercises such as turning or pawing. If you find that your dog is basically enthusiastic about this kind of activity, it is worthwhile to attend a Dogdancing course for beginners.

There you and your four-legged friend will learn the basics of this dog sport and can find out if dogdancing is something you will enjoy for a long time.

Always remain patient during Dogdancing training

Dogdancing training

When training together, always take care not to overload your dog. Use only positive confirmations when practising and make sure that your four-legged friend combines dog dancing with fun.

In addition, a continuous exercise unit should never last longer than 15 minutes. Afterwards your four-legged friend needs a break to collect himself and to recover a little. After all Dogdancing demands a lot from him mentally as well as physically.

A reward after a successful round of training should not be missing. Praise your quadruped extensively and reward him calmly with a little treat.

For this purpose, we recommend that you rely on healthy dog snacks such as our cereal-free soft snacks with extra high animal proteins.

Dogdancing as tournament sport

Dogdancing has long since developed into a tournament sport, in which even world championships are organized. At the tournaments the participants compete in different official classes and have to prove their skills.

A performance judge evaluates the performance and awards up to 200 points, which are made up of a maximum of 100 points each for the technical and artistic performance during the performance. Aids such as toys, treats or a clicker are not allowed.

In addition to the seven official classes, which include a junior class as well as a class for seniors and dogs with a handicap, tournament organizers can also define fun classes in which no points will be awarded and no comparison will be made between the participating teams.

Dogdancing and the right nutrition

A balanced diet is essential for the health of dogs. This applies to all animals, of course, but is particularly important for active dogs.

If you do dog dancing with your dog on a regular basis, you should pay special attention to feeding it according to its needs. In this context, take into account that your four-legged friend has a higher energy requirement due to the sporting activities.

In order to cover this requirement, a high-quality dog food such as Bellfor Premium PUR Aktiv is very well suited. In addition, it makes sense to rely on special dietary supplements in the daily diet of your four-legged friend.

We recommend the following products from our range for dogs that are active when dogdancing:

In addition, dried bananas and white chia seeds provide important vitamins and minerals.
