Australian Shepherd

The Australian Shepherd is a medium sized North American dog breed which has been recognised by the FCI since 1996. The FCI leads the Australian Shepherd in group 1, i.e. among the herding dogs. Australian Shepherds are lively, persistent and agile. In addition, their protective instinct is quite strong.

Characteristics of the Australian Shepherd

The life expectancy of the Australian Shepherd is between 13 and 15 years. It has a half-long, very dense fur, which makes it insensitive to cold and wetness. His physique is balanced.

The Australian Shepherd weighs between 16 and 32 kilograms, with females usually ranging from 16 to 25 and males from 25 to 32 kilos.

The height at the withers is between 46 and 58 centimetres, with female Australian Shepherds not exceeding 53 centimetres by breed standard and male animals measuring at least 51 cm.

The coat of the Australian Shepherd may have the following primary colours:

  • Red (red)
  • Black (black)
  • Blue-merle (grey basic colour with marbled black)
  • Red-merle (beige or light red basic colour with marbled red or brown)

These basic colours can also be combined with copper and white markings on the Australian Shepherd, making a total of 16 different colour combinations possible.

Australian Shepherd Character

The Australian Shepherd is an intelligent and attentive dog who has a distinct protective instinct due to his original purpose. Nevertheless it is generally not aggressive and can be educated with some consequence very well.

In addition, the Australian Shepherd is considered a loyal team player who prefers company. The child-friendly dog breed is very suitable for families. However, he should always be given enough exercise and activity. Because that promotes the play instinct as well as the intelligence of the Australian Shepherd.

Activities with the Australian Shepherd

The Australian Shepherd loves to be moved and kept busy. He is therefore a regular guest on all dog sites and is perfectly suited for dog sports, such as for example:

  • Dog trekking
  • Lunging
  • Agility

In addition, the Australian Shepherd is always happy to accompany his master or mistress on a ride.

Australian Shepherd Diseases

The Aussie, as the Australian Shepherd is also called, is usually extremely robust and healthy. Nevertheless, diseases can of course also occur in this breed.

Possible diseases of the Australian Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and various eye diseases such as cataracts.
