Cane Corso

The Cane Corso Italiano is a dog breed from Italy, which is led by the FCI in group 2 (Pinscher and Schnauzer). Also known as the Italian Great Dane, the Cane Corso was originally bred as a guard dog and is therefore perfectly suited as a reliable watchdog.

Characteristics of the Cane Corso

The Cane Corso Italiano is a large dog breed with a height at the withers of about 60 to 68 centimetres, with a minimum height for males and a maximum height for females of 64 cm. The weight of the Cane Corso is in the range of 40 to 50 kilograms (males from and females up to 45 kg).

The coat of the Cane Corso is smooth and short and may be:

  • Fellow colours
  • Brushed
  • Light grey
  • Slate grey
  • Black
  • Buckshot
  • Lead grey

The Cane Corso Italiano is a big and heavy dog. Nevertheless, his appearance does not look clumsy at all. He has a deep and wide chest and a muscular physique.

The shape of his head clearly shows that the Cane Corso is one of the Molossians. The broad head is characterized by a prominent forehead and a clearly recognizable eyebrow arch. It also has a slight forebite and high set triangular ears that hang down to the side.

The life expectancy of the Cane Corso Italiano is usually between 10 and 12 years, although according to a study from 2017 it obviously also depends on the coat colour of the animal.

Cane Corso Italiano Essence and Character

Cane Corso

In principle, the Cane Corso Italiano has a relaxed and calm character. At the same time, however, its origins as a guard dog cannot be denied. It is in the nature of the watchful animal to protect its owners, which makes the Cane Corso very suitable as a watchdog.

Despite his self-confident appearance, he is quite sensitive and attaches great importance to a close relationship with his master and mistress. With consequent education the Cane Corso is a very friendly contemporary. Only his hunting instinct is difficult to suppress from time to time.

In Brandenburg and Bavaria, the Cane Corso Italiano is led as a list dog, so that this race must make a character test there.

Activities with the Cane Corso

The Cane Corso is rather a quiet dog. Nevertheless he needs enough exercise and movement. Nowadays the Cane Corso Italiano is above all a popular family dog. In addition, he is also used as a guard dog, service dog and (especially in Italy) herding dog.

Dog owners should generally bear in mind that the large, heavy animals need to be kept busy and challenged enough. Therefore it is often advisable to visit a dog school.

The Cane Corso Italiano is particularly interested in the following dog sports:

  • Cycling with the dog
  • Obedience

In addition, the Cane Corso loves to go for long walks or hikes with its owner.

Cane Corso Italiano Diseases

Despite his robust body and his original use as a working dog, there are of course some diseases to which the Italian Cane Corso is susceptible.

These are (as usual with large dog breeds) in particular hip and elbow dysplasia as well as other joint problems. In addition, the Cane Corso suffers relatively frequently from diseases of the heart muscle as well as problems with its sensitive eyes.

Cane Corso Food

In order to ensure the well-being of the Cane Corso Italiano and to prevent possible diseases such as joint problems, the dog needs special, high-quality food, which guarantees an optimal nutrient supply.

For the health of the musculoskeletal system, a dietary supplement with Bellfor Gelenke & Knochen (Joints & Bones) also makes sense.

The Bellfor nutrition concept supports the healthy development of your Cane Corso Italiano from an early age.
