Chihuahua

Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is a small breed of dog from Mexico. To be more precise, the Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog in the world and is listed by the FCI in Group 9. Despite their small body size, Chihuahuas are very courageous and do not shy away from larger dogs.

Characteristics of the Chihuahua

The life expectancy of Chihuahua is 12 to 20 years. The size of an adult animal is between 15 and 23 cm. The ideal weight of the small quadrupeds should be between 1.5 and 2.5 kg, whereby also lighter animals are accepted, provided that their weight does not fall below 500 grams.

Chihuahua is available in two varieties:

  • Shorthaired Chihuahua
  • Long-haired Chihuahua

Regardless of hair length, all Chihuahuas have a round head and large protruding ears with a slightly rounded tip. Chihuahuas are available in almost all colors from plain white to three colored to completely black. However, the colouring "Merle" has been considered a breeding defect since 2010. This is due to the fact that Chihuahuas in this colour often tend to malformations and certain diseases.

Chihuahua Character and Essence

Chihuahua puppy

Although the Chihuahua is the smallest dog in the world, it is characterized by an extraordinarily courageous nature. If he were taller, he would undoubtedly be the perfect protector. He is also considered extremely loyal, but chooses carefully whom to show his affection.

Furthermore, Chihuahuas are considered vigilant, lively and restless. They often demand the attention of their owners. If a Chihuahua is pampered too much, it can quickly become moody and disobedient. Consistency in the upbringing is therefore no less important with this breed than with larger dogs.

Activities with the Chihuahua

Despite its small size, the Chihuahua's urge to move should not be underestimated. Because he wants to be as busy and challenged as his larger peers

Of course the activities should always be adapted to the physical characteristics of this small breed. If this is the case, there are many possibilities to keep the Chihuahua busy and happy.

Even dog sports are possible with Chihuahua, if intelligence and agility instead of endurance and strength are required.

Possible dog sports for the Chihuahua are for example:

  • Dogdancing
  • Agility

Chihuahua Diseases

The Chihuahua suffers particularly frequently from tooth misalignments due to its head form. These promote the formation of tartar, which makes daily dental care indispensable in Chihuahua.

In addition, there is an increased risk of urinary calculus formation and diabetes mellitus in this breed.

Chihuahuas food

In principle, a balanced and appropriate diet plays an important role in the prevention of such diseases in Chihuahua.

The food should be easily digestible and take into account factors such as age, weight, sporting activities and any existing diseases and allergies.
