The Siberian Husky is a medium sized dog breed, which is led by the FCI in group 5. The sociable and intelligent Husky originally comes from Siberia, where this breed was used as a working and draught dog about 2,000 years ago.

Characteristics of the Husky

The life expectancy of the Siberian Husky is between 12 and 15 years. Female specimens reach a size of 50 to 56 centimeters, while males reach 54 to 60 centimeters. In terms of weight, the husky can reach 16 to 23 kilos (bitches), or 20 to 27 kilos (males).

The Husky has a well-proportioned, compact physique. Its almond-shaped eyes can be brown, blue or multicoloured. Its medium-sized ears are triangular and upright.

The fur of the Siberian Husky is dense, medium-long and reminds of a fur from the appearance.

Typical colorings of the fur:

  • white
  • black
  • silver
  • copper
  • agouti

The animals are usually multicolored.

Siberian Husky nature and character

The Husky is not a classic family dog. Compared to many other dog breeds it cannot be overlooked that he is a pack animal that always needs company and wants to be kept busy.

If the Siberian Husky is kept in a species-appropriate manner and receives sufficient attention, it is a affectionate and extremely human-friendly dog.

Due to his pronounced urge to move, it is important to offer the Husky enough exercise. A combination of hunting instinct and drive makes it difficult to keep control.

With enough care and movement, the Siberian Husky proves to be loving, adaptable and open to strangers.

Husky activity

Activities with the Husky

There are probably only a few dog breeds that have such a strong urge to move as the Husky. This feature makes it perfect for sled dog racing, where it can show off its strengths to full advantage.

Because huskies are very human friendly, they are not suitable as watchdogs despite their physical strength.

Huskies feel good in all sports where endurance is required.

These include, for example:

  • sled dog races
  • jogging
  • bicycling

Siberian Husky Diseases

The Husky is without doubt a robust animal. However, there are two diseases that are common in this breed.

One is Willebrand's disease and the other is analogous dermatosis.

The analogous dermatosis is caused by a lack of zinc and leads especially in the face of the animal to hair loss and sore spots.

Willebrand's disease is a blood clotting disorder that can cause even minor injuries to lead to major blood loss.

Huskies Food

Huskies need a lot of exercise and therefore have a correspondingly high energy requirement, which has to be covered with the right food in the right quantity.

Bellfor Haut & Fell (Skin & Coat) food supplement is also suitable for the prevention of analogous dermatosis. This contains a lot of zinc and can therefore help to prevent a zinc deficiency.

In addition, it is recommended to supply the joints, which are additionally stressed during sport, with the right nutrients. This prevents the development of joint diseases such as hip dysplasia. For this purpose, a preventive dietary supplement with Bellfor Gelenke & Knochen (Joints & Bones) is advisable.

Bellfor's nutrition concept takes the needs of your Husky into account from an early age.
