Labrador

The Labrador Retriever belongs to the 350 dog breeds recognized by the FCI, which are assigned to group 8 (retrieving dogs). The Labrador originates from Newfoundland and is one of the medium-sized dog breeds. It is regarded as a patient and balanced family dog. At the same time the Labrador Retriever is very active and needs a lot of exercise.

Characteristics of the Labrador

Labradors have a quite powerful physique as well as a short and dense fur. The fur-dress is monochrome and either chocolate-brown, yellow or black. The height at withers of this breed ranges from 55 to 62 cm, while the weight of adult Labradors can be between 25 and 36 kilograms.

Females are, as usual, lighter and smaller, while male Labradors are usually slightly larger and weigh more. The life expectancy of the Labrador retriever is usually about 10 to 12 years.

Labrador Retriever Essence and Character

The Labrador Retriever is neither aggressive nor anxious. It is generally regarded as adaptable, family-friendly and fond of children.

Labrador activity

Furthermore, the following characteristics are typical for Labradors:

  • sociability
  • equilibrium
  • inquisitiveness
  • agility
  • patience
  • obedience
  • willingness to learn

By the way, Labrador retrievers are particularly good at retrieving. Not for nothing is the term retriever derived from to retrieve, which means to retrieve in German.

Even if Labradors are excellent family dogs in principle, the urge to move of this breed of future owners should not be underestimated. The Labrador Retriever is very active and therefore needs a lot of exercise and occupation, which can be a challenge for mistress and master in everyday life.

Activities with the Labrador

Labradors were originally bred as hunting dogs and are still frequently used for hunting today. They are very agile and therefore open for nearly all activities where they can let off steam.

One of the special strengths of the Labrador Retriever is without doubt its ability to retrieve. But also other dog sports are perfectly suitable to keep the intelligent and persistent animals busy.

Possible dog sports for Labradors are for example:

  • retrieve
  • dummy training
  • agility

Labrador Diseases

Since the Labrador is a very active breed of dog, there is a tendency to an increased risk of hip dysplasia. This joint disease, in which the socket and head of the joint increasingly wear out, is associated with great pain and a severe restriction of mobility at an advanced stage.

Proper nutrition of the Labrador Retriever

In order to avoid hip dysplasia, Labrador retrievers should be fed from a very early age with the aim of ensuring an optimal supply of all important nutrients.

We recommend that you use special dog food from our range to feed your Labrador and that you trust Bellfor Gelenke & Knochen (Joints & Bones) to prevent joint problems.

Bellfor's special breed feed promotes the well-being and health of your Labrador from an early age.
