Dog breeds with pictures and all infos

The number of different dog breeds is large. The FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) currently recognizes almost 350 different breeds worldwide. Estimates that include breeds that are not recognized by the FCI even assume 800 and in some cases considerably more dog breeds.

Dog breeds according to FCI

The FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) is the largest association dealing with cynology. Cynology is the science of breeding, care, education, behaviour, diseases and breeds of domestic dogs.

The declared aim of the FCI is to promote the breeding of pedigree dogs and their welfare throughout the world. Descriptions of dog breeds are published in four different languages (German, English, Spanish and French).

The FCI classifies pedigree dogs into the following 10 groups:

  1. Herding and driving dogs
  2. Pinscher and Schnauzer
  3. Terrier
  4. Bassets
  5. Lace and primitive type dogs
  6. Running and sweat dogs
  7. Pointing dogs
  8. Retrieving dogs
  9. Company and companion dogs
  10. Greyhounds

Dog breeds by size

It remains to be seen whether future dog owners will follow the FCI classification. For most future dog owners the size of their four-legged friends is probably more important than the typical behaviour of a dog breed.

On the basis of the size the following distribution can be determined:

The right dog breeds for beginners

Not every breed is suitable for beginners. After all, a pedigree dog is not only characterized by a certain appearance, but also by certain traits. In particular hunting and herding dogs belong to the breeds around which the first owners of a dog should rather make a bow. Here either a pronounced hunting instinct or a protective instinct can cause problems to untrained persons.

Much better are for example Golden Retriever, Pug, Labrador, Poodle and French Bulldog. These usually have a gentle and friendly nature, which makes these breeds very suitable for beginners.
