German Shepherd

The German Shepherd Dog is a big dog breed from Germany and is classified in group 1 by the FCI. The German Shepherd was born at the end of the 19th century and is a classic protection, guard and herding dog. He is appreciated in many countries as a police dog and is also used by rescue services and as a guide dog.

Characteristics of the German Shepherd Dog

With a height at withers of 55 to 60 centimetres for females and 60 to 65 centimetres for males, the German Shepherd Dog is one of the big breeds. Its weight is usually between 22 and 40 kilograms, with female shepherd dogs reaching a maximum of 32 kg and male specimens usually weighing at least 30 kg.

The shepherd dog is characterized by a muscular and strong body with balanced proportions. The size of its wedge-shaped head fits perfectly into the overall picture.

In addition, almond-shaped, dark eyes and pointed, upright ears belong to the optical characteristics of the German Shepherd Dog.

In order to avoid a disease of hip dysplasia and other joint diseases, the breeding of the German Shepherd Dog is now increasingly emphasized on the fact that the back does not fall obliquely to the rear.

The coat of the shepherd dog, whose life expectancy is about 9 to 13 years, is dense, easy to care for and weatherproof.

The breed standard permits numerous fur colorings with the German shepherd dog, whereby a black saddle with brown, red-brown, light-gray or yellow insignia is particularly widespread.

Shepherd dog nature and character

As a classic herding dog, the German Shepherd Dog is characterized by an attentive nature and a pronounced protective instinct. Nevertheless, he is usually playful, balanced and good-natured.

In addition, the shepherd dog is extremely self-confident, resilient and strong in nerves. These qualities, combined with his obedience, make him an excellent service dog, which is appreciated in numerous countries all over the world.

Activities with the shepherd dog

Shepherd dogs are teachable, affectionate and have a high urge to move. Thanks to their good sense of smell, they are often used as sniffer dogs. In addition, they are ideal for training as guide dogs or for their original breeding purpose as watch and herding dogs.

Who decides for a German shepherd dog as a family dog, should take care to use the four-legged friend to full capacity and to demand both mentally and physically.

For this purpose the following dog sports are suitable for example very well:

  • obedience
  • agility

German Shepherd Diseases

Despite their robust physique, German shepherds are susceptible to joint diseases. Hip joint dysplasia is particularly common, which is associated with severe pain and an increasing restriction of mobility.

In addition, shepherd dogs occasionally suffer from pancreatic insufficiency, in which a genetic defect disrupts the production of enzymes in the pancreas so that the animal cannot digest its food properly.

The right diet for the shepherd dog

A balanced diet plays an important role for the German shepherd dog. Special food can help in pancreatic insufficiency to facilitate digestion and also ensure an optimal supply of nutrients for the health of the joints.

To prevent hip dysplasia, a dietary supplement with Bellfor Gelenke & Knochen (Joints & Bones) is also recommended.

Bellfor's special breed feed promotes the well-being and health of your German Shepherd from an early age.
