Shih Tzu

The Shih Tzu is a small dog breed, which has its origin in Tibet, where it was already bred more than 1,000 years ago by monks. The FCI classifies the Shih Tzu in group 9. Today the Shih Tzu is a popular social and family dog, for which apart from his small size also his friendly nature might be responsible.

Characteristics of the Shih Tzu

The life expectancy of the Shih Tzu is usually between 10 and 16 years. The animals reach a maximum size of 27 centimeters and a weight of 4.5 to 8 kilograms.

Shih Tzu means lion. For the monks it was originally important to breed a dog breed that resembled a lion in its appearance. This has the reason that Buddha is said to have possessed a dog which could turn into a lion.

The Shih Tzu has a long curved neck. Its coat is long and dense. It may be wavy, but not curly, and has a lot of undercoat. The breed-standard permits numerous colorings with the Shih Tzu. Also a multicolored fur-dress is possible. The long, hanging ears of the Shih Tzu are often so densely hairy that they can hardly be seen.

Shih Tzu nature and character

Shih Tzu nature and character

The Shih Tzu is considered to be extremely intelligent and independent. He has a friendly and attentive nature and is at the same time very proud and lively.

In addition, the Shih Tzu is playful and cuddly and always seeks closeness to his master and mistress. The Shih Tzu usually gets along well with other pets and is generally uncomplicated when dealing with children. However, it is important that the Shih Tzu is not harassed by them.

The fact that this breed has practically no hunting instinct makes the education of the willing Shih Tzu very easy.

Activities with the Shih Tzu

The Shih Tzu is a typical social dog. He is small but still very lively. For this reason it is important to keep him busy and play with him at all times.

For great achievements in dog sport he lacks both strength and endurance. If his physical conditions are considered, however, some dog sports are possible with the Shih Tzu.

These include for example:

  • Agility
  • Dog dancing

Shih Tzu Diseases

Unfortunately also the Shih Tzu is not immune from race-typical diseases. Due to its short nose, it suffers particularly frequently from problems with the respiratory tract. In addition, there is a hereditary predisposition for patella luxations (dislocated kneecaps).

Shih Tzu Food

The Shih Tzu should in any case be fed with a natural and high-quality dog food appropriate to the species. The rationing should always be adapted to the needs of the animal, taking into account age, weight and physical activity.

To strengthen the joints and to prevent patella luxations, a dietary supplement with Bellfor Gelenke & Knochen (Joints & Bones) also makes sense.

The Bellfor nutrition concept supports the healthy development of your Shih Tzu from an early age.
