Despite its name, the American Akita actually has its origin in Japan. Because in the 50's the Akita was introduced into the USA and bred there further. Since the year 2.000 the American Akita is recognized by the FCI as an own breed to distinguish it from the Japanese Akita Inu and is listed in group 5.

Characteristics of the American Akita

The average life expectancy of the American Akita is about 12 to 15 years. With a size of 66 - 71 centimeters (males), respectively 61 to 66 centimeters (females) the American Akita belongs to the big dog breeds. Its weight ranges from 35 to 55 kilograms.

The American Akita is stock-haired and has a lot of short undercoat. The breed standard permits all coat colors, however, prescribes a clear demarcation of the individual colors with multi-colored animals.

The ears of the American Akita are small, triangular and slightly forward. Its eyes are dark brown, the edges of the eyelids black.

The American Akita is considered independent and autonomous. While it builds up a strong bond with its owner, it is rather indifferent to strangers, yet remains friendly.

Due to its dominant and stubborn character, the American Akita is rather suitable for more experienced dog owners, who bring the necessary sensitivity to the upbringing. Because even if the breed is very teachable, excessive pressure brings nothing at all. As a rule, an American Akita will not submit.

Activities with the American Akita

The American Akita is suitable among other things as a companion or family dog. In addition, he is also a capable rescue and avalanche dog.

Since it was originally bred as a hunting dog, the American Akita still has a strong hunting instinct and needs a lot of exercise. At least in forests it should always be kept on a leash.
