Pneumonia in dogs: symptoms and treatment

If your dog suffers from lung inflammation, the tissue of his lung is inflamed. The technical term for this disease is pneumonia. Pathogens such as bacteria, fungi or viruses are often responsible for pneumonia in dogs.

Even if an inflammation of the lung can normally be treated well, you should not take a possible disease lightly. If not treated, pneumonia can be life-threatening for your dog.

This article explains the symptoms you need to watch out for, how pneumonia is treated and what you can do to prevent it.

Possible causes of pneumonia in dogs

Pneumonia in dogs can be caused by a variety of causes. It is often caused by an infestation of the lungs with fungi, viruses, bacteria or parasites.

In addition, the penetration of food or water into the lungs and the inhalation of toxic vapours can also lead to inflammation of the respiratory organ.

Other possible causes of pneumonia in dogs are tumours and inflammatory diseases that spread to the lungs and can be triggered by allergies and medication, for example.

Detecting pneumonia in dogs

Pneumonia in dogs manifests itself as a series of symptoms that occur as the disease progresses.

Among other things, the following symptoms indicate that your dog has pneumonia:

  • Lassitude
  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Rattling noises when breathing

As your dog progresses, the pneumonia will cause him to get worse and worse air, leading to a lack of oxygen. The lack of oxygen can easily be recognized by the blue colored mucous membranes.

Dogs with pneumonia must go to the vet

Although pneumonia in dogs starts with a supposedly harmless cough, you should consult a veterinarian with your sick four-legged friend as soon as possible. This is because the disease weakens your dog's immune system, making him susceptible to secondary diseases.

In addition, pneumonia in your dog may have been triggered by an embolism (circulatory disorder). If this is the case, it can even be fatal for the four-legged friend without timely treatment.

Treating pneumonia in dogs

In order for your dog's pneumonia to be successfully treated, the veterinarian must first get to the bottom of the exact cause and, if necessary, take appropriate measures to counter it.

For the treatment of pneumonia itself, the administration of antibiotics is usually the best choice. The symptoms of embolism should usually be controlled quite quickly.

You can also give your dog a herbal expectorant to accompany the medication. However, this does not replace the trip to the vet and the antibiotics which he prescribes to your four-legged friend.
