Laryngeal inflammation in dogs: causes and treatment

Hundeimmunsystem schwaechen kann

The technical term for laryngitis is laryngeal inflammation. A laryngitis in dogs can be both acute and chronic. In many cases it does not occur alone, but in combination with other complaints.

In this article, you will learn what causes laryngitis in your dog can be, what symptoms to look out for and how to treat it. We will also explain what you can do to prevent it.

Laryngeal inflammation in dogs: possible causes

Your dog's laryngitis can be caused by several things. In most cases, it occurs as a result of irritation, which promotes the spread of bacteria and viruses in the larynx and thus the development of inflammation.

Such irritation can be caused by the following causes, for example:

  • Inhalation of cold air during the winter months
  • Vocal chords overloaded by constant barking
  • Constant pressure on the larynx due to a necklace that fits too tightly or pulling on the leash
  • Inhalation of smoke, gas or dust particles
  • Problems with the esophagus
  • Existing respiratory tract diseases, such as kennel cough

Symptoms of laryngitis in dogs

An inflammation of the larynx in dogs usually manifests itself with quite clear symptoms. Typical for the disease is a loud and dry cough. The cough caused in dogs by laryngitis usually occurs in episodes, so that affected animals repeatedly suffer from cough attacks.

The cough is particularly pronounced in winter due to the cold air. The coughing attacks can become so strong that your dog has to choke or even vomit from them. The escape of white mucus is typical.

As laryngitis causes your dog to have difficulty swallowing, it is very likely that he will eat very little or even no more, which leads to increasing fatigue. Another sign of laryngitis is a hotter or complete absence of barking.

If your dog's laryngitis is caused by bacteria or viruses, fever may be added to the symptoms. With a severe, chronic laryngitis it can come with your quadruped under circumstances even to acute shortness of breath.

Diagnosing laryngitis in dogs

It is usually quite easy to diagnose laryngitis in dogs. If you suspect that your pet is suffering from laryngitis, we recommend that you see a vet to be on the safe side. The veterinarian will examine your pet's larynx using a laryngeal mirror and can then tell you whether your suspicion is justified.

Treatment of laryngitis in dogs

If your dog has been diagnosed with laryngitis, the first step is to eliminate its cause. Only then will the following treatment measures be successful.

As a rule, so-called antitussives are suitable for the treatment of acute laryngitis, i.e. drugs that suppress the cough stimulus. This can bring the dog's larynx to rest. In addition, you can promote healing by inhaling chamomile.

However, if laryngitis is chronic, its treatment is usually much more time-consuming. In addition to the above-mentioned measures, it is often also necessary to administer cortisone containing preparations. In particularly severe cases, an operation may even be necessary.

Prevention of laryngitis in dogs

To find out how you can prevent laryngitis in your dog, it is worth taking a look at the possible causes. For example, avoid inhaling dust and smoke and make sure that the collar of your four-legged friend fits properly.

In addition, we recommend that you do something for your dog's defences. Use Bellfor Immune for this purpose. This natural food supplement made from insect protein, propolis and selected medicinal plants provides the animal's body with exactly the nutrients it needs for its immune system.

Especially in winter, Bellfor Immune can make a decisive contribution to strong defences and significantly reduce the risk of laryngitis in your dog.
