English Bulldog

Englische Bulldogge

The English Bulldog is a small breed of dog from Great Britain (FCI Group 2). There it was originally bred for bullfighting. Today, however, the English Bulldog is a popular family dog, which distinguishes itself among other things by its gentle and child-loving nature.

Characteristics of the English Bulldog

The life expectancy of the English Bulldog is unfortunately relatively low with 8 to 10 years. Their size ranges from 31 to 40 centimetres, with female English bulldogs usually weighing between 22 and 23 kilos. Males are usually somewhat heavier with 24 to 25 kilograms.

One of the characteristic features of the English Bulldog is its compact and compact body. The muscular animals have a broad chest and relatively short legs.

The muzzle of the English Bulldog is short and broad, the head quite big and characterized by a flat forehead as well as an easy formation of skin folds. The powerful, wide jaw, with which the lower jaw protrudes somewhat, is also typical.

In addition, the English Bulldog has dark eyes as well as high set on, far apart lying ears.

The fur of the race is short and extremely low-maintenance. The race-standard permits numerous colorings. So, the fur of the English Bulldog can be loh, white, rehfarben, piebald, red-white, red-blotched, rehfarben and white or also blotched as well as blotched and white.

English Bulldog Nature and Character

The English Bulldog is characterized by a bold and courageous character. It is considered determined, but at the same time patient and gentle. In addition, she is always looking for closeness to her master and mistress and is also very fond of children.

Despite the original breeding goal, the English Bulldog is therefore a great social dog, which is also suitable for families with children. However, owners should be prepared for a sometimes quite stubborn animal, which needs a consistent education.

Activities with the English Bulldog

The English Bulldog is considered to be courageous and vigilant, making it well suited as a watchdog. However, dog sport is clearly not one of its strengths. Because on the one hand the animals are very sensitive to heat and suffer partly also from problems with the circulation as well as the respiration. On the other hand, English bulldogs have a genetic predisposition for joint problems.

These circumstances make sure that they are quite limited regarding their physical efficiency. If it is not too strenuous, some dog sports are possible with the English Bulldog.

These include for example:

  • Agility
  • Trick dogging

English Bulldog Diseases

Due to its cosy nature the English Bulldog quickly tends to be overweight. This in turn can lead to numerous secondary illnesses, such as heart problems, high blood pressure or diabetes.

In addition, the English Bulldog has a genetic predisposition for joint diseases, whereby the risk of hip dysplasia is very high.

Last but not least, her short muzzle often causes breathing problems, which further restricts her urge to move.

English Bulldog Food

Due to the tendency to be overweight, the English Bulldog's diet should place great emphasis on needs-based rationing. A high-quality, natural dog food with a low energy density is the right choice.

In addition, a dietary supplement with Bellfor Gelenke & Knochen (Joints & Bones) is useful for the prevention of hip joint dysplasia.

The Bellfor nutrition concept supports the development and well-being of your English Bulldog from an early age.
