St Bernard

The Bernhardiner is a large breed of dog from Switzerland. There the Saint Bernard was originally bred by monks of the hospice on the Great St. Bernard as a guard, protection and rescue dog. Today, however, the St Bernard, which is classified by the FCI as Group 2, is also a popular family and companion dog.

Characteristics of the Saint Bernard

The life expectancy of the Saint Bernard is about 10 years. The animals reach a withers-height of 65 to 80 cm (bitches), respectively 70 to 90 cm (males). The weight of the Bernhardiners moves in an area of 55 to 80 kilograms.

The big animals are characterized by a powerful, harmoniously working physique with a wide back and a curved thorax. The head of the Saint Bernard is large and broad and has a forehead with a slight wrinkle formation as well as a conspicuous forehead furrow. His brown eyes are medium in size, his medium ears are set high.

St Bernards are bred both as shorthair and as longhair. The coat is dense and smooth with both variants and has a lot of undercoat. The basic colors of the Bernhardiners are either white or red-brown. The breed standard provides markings on the paws, the chest, the nose band, the blaze, the tip of the tail as well as in the neck.

St Bernard character

Despite their impressive size, St Bernards are extremely sensitive and gentle animals that prove to be extremely affectionate. Although their character can be described as calm and reserved, they have a lively temperament. In dealing with her family and especially with children she shows her selfless character, which also contributes to her suitability as a family dog.

Activities with the Saint Bernard

If dog owners have enough space, St Bernards are excellent family dogs. Some of them are also kept as guard dogs. Although they are still used as rescue dogs, their importance in this area has greatly decreased, as they have lost much of their original mobility due to breeding.

Considering their size, the need for movement of St Bernards is not quite as high as with other large dog breeds. Nevertheless, they naturally need enough exercise. Besides they need a lot of consequence and attention with the education and also the care expenditure should not be underestimated.
