Milk teeth in dogs

Milchzähne beim Hund

Just like humans, dogs are born without teeth and then get milk teeth, which later have to give way to permanent teeth.

The milk teeth of the dog

The breakthrough of the milk teeth begins already in the third life-week of the dog. In total, the milk teeth consist of 28 teeth, which are significantly more pointed than the permanent teeth. On the lower and upper jaw, six incisors and molars each as well as two canines gradually break through.

The change of teeth in dogs

From the fourth to the seventh month of life, the teeth change in dogs. The dog gradually loses its milk teeth, which are replaced by its permanent teeth. The total number of permanent teeth in dogs is 42. In large breeds the change of teeth starts earlier than in smaller breeds.

Up to three months can pass before a dog has lost all its milk teeth and the permanent teeth have regrown. Since the four-legged friends swallow the fallen out teeth frequently, some dog owners do not notice the tooth change at all with their dog.

Possible problems during the change of teeth

Unfortunately, the change of teeth does not go unnoticed and without complaints in all dogs. Some four-legged friends suffer not only from strong toothaches, but have besides also fever and diarrhoea or eat hardly anything.

To the chagrin of their owners, some dogs also tend to chew on furniture during tooth changes.

In some cases it can also happen that a permanent tooth has already broken through while the milk tooth has not yet fallen out. This often leaves only a visit to the vet to pull out the milk tooth. Otherwise, the permanent tooth cannot grow back in its correct position.

So owners can support their dog with the tooth change

If you usually feed your dog dry food, it is best to soak it during the change of teeth or temporarily use a wet food.

Retrieving and tugging should not be part of the dog's daily routine during the change of teeth. Not only can they cause pain, but they can also cause damage to the growing teeth.

A better alternative are suitable chewing articles or chewing toys, which the dog can deal with during the change of teeth. If the masticatory toys are cooled beforehand, this ensures a pleasant cooling of the gums. In many cases it can be avoided that the young dog damages furniture or other objects in the household by chewing articles and toys also.

When buying chewing items to support the change of teeth, we recommend that you always give preference to natural products without artificial additives. Also note that the extra calories of such a snack must be taken into account in the amount of food.
