Go for a walk: Tips for relaxed walks with your dog

Dogs need a lot of attention from their owners. This also includes going for a walk with your four-legged friend every day. How often and how long you should go for a walk with your dog depends on the breed and age of the animal. We will explain what is important in the following.

How often you should walk your dog

Go for a walk

How often you should go for a walk with your dog cannot be said in general. Essentially, the frequency depends on when your dog has to do his business.

For puppies and older dogs this is relatively common, so you may need to plan at least a short walk every two to three hours. For an adult dog, it is usually enough to walk three or four times a day.

How long you should walk your dog

Of course, it is not enough to walk your dog outside for a few minutes so that he can do his business. Apart from that you also have to make sure that your four-legged friend gets enough exercise when going for a walk.

What means enough in this context depends on various factors. Among other things, the age and the state of health of the four-legged friend play a role. Because a dog senior, who may suffer from osteoarthritis, needs less exercise than a healthy dog of the best age.

In addition, however, the need for exercise also differs considerably from breed to breed. While a Yorkshire Terrier, for example, can't get enough of running around, a Bulldog is more comfortable and is satisfied with a comparatively short walk.

How to find the right amount of exercise

It is important that you find the right amount of exercise for your dog. Because too much strain can harm your four-legged friend just as little as too little. Therefore, consider breed specific characteristics and consider the age and health of your dog.

In addition, it is helpful to orient yourself to a certain extent to the behavior of the four-legged friend. In most cases, your dog will show you quite clearly when walking when he is exhausted and has enough. Nevertheless, in the end it should always be you, not your dog, who decides when the walk is over.

Which places are suitable for a walk?

Walking is not just about getting your dog moving and making it easier. In addition, it is at least as important that the four-legged friend can let off steam and go on discovery tour.

Varied routes with different surfaces are particularly suitable for this purpose. If you have the possibility, you should choose areas with as little traffic as possible. During a walk in the forest or on field paths, your dog has many possibilities to let off steam and sniff around to his heart's content.

During the summer months you should also make sure that your route has enough shade and maybe even a suitable water for cooling down.

As a dog owner, you must observe these obligations when walking a dog.

There are, of course, some obligations that you as the dog owner must observe when walking a dog. One of these is that you must remove your dog's faeces. If you do not do this, you will be fined.

In addition, in public parks and many areas in the city centre, linen is usually compulsory. This means that you are not allowed to let your dog run free while walking. By the way, list dogs are generally subject to a leash and muzzle obligation, unless the non-hazardousness of the respective animal has been proven by a character test.

You should also be aware that you are responsible and liable for all damage caused by your dog when walking. It is therefore in your interest to educate your four-legged friend correctly and to take good care of him while walking. As additional security, it may be useful to take out a dog liability insurance policy which covers you in the event of personal injury or damage to property.

Make sure the collar and leash are comfortable for your dog.

Usually, dogs love to walk and look forward to their next promenade.

However, not all dogs happily don the collar. There may be several reasons:

  • the dog was not accustomed to a collar in childhood;
  • the dog has psychological trauma or bad associations with the collar;
  • the collar may be causing the dog to feel pain.

And if the first two reasons require time and careful behaviour correction, you can choose a suitable collar for your dog right now.

The variety of dog collars, leashes and harnesses is impressive today. Finding the perfect collar is no easy task, but choose from top rated dog leashes that suits your dog, not just looks good.

Avoid overloading the joints

Frequent climbing of stairs is a great strain for the joints of dogs. If you live in the upper floors of an apartment building, it makes sense to carry your four-legged friend up and down the stairs. This applies in particular to puppies as well as to races, which tend to joint problems strengthened.

With puppies, you should also make sure to keep the walks short. Five minutes are sufficient per month of life of the small quadruped. In this way, you ensure that your puppy does not overstrain himself when walking and that his musculoskeletal system does not suffer any damage.

Reward your dog for good walk-behaviour

Of course, your dog should listen to you when you walk him. You are welcome to reward good behaviour with one or the other treat. However, it is important that you take the extra calories of the snacks into account when rationing the food. Otherwise your dog will become overweight sooner or later.

Also make sure that the dog snacks of your choice are of good quality. We recommend that you reward your dog with our soft snacks. The tasty snacks are grain-free and contain no artificial additives.
