Itching in dogs: possible causes and treatment methods

Itching is extremely unpleasant for dogs and leads to excessive scratching in affected animals. As a result, the itching becomes stronger over time and the skin health of the four-legged friend suffers increasingly.

In this article we explain the causes of itching in dogs and what you can do about it.

Consequences of itching in dogs

Dog itching

A strong itching is naturally extremely annoying for dogs and usually leads to excessive scratching. In the long run the skin and the fur of the quadruped will be affected.

It comes sooner or later to skin redness, bald spots and even open wounds. This is far more than a cosmetic problem.

Because open wounds make sure that the skin no longer functions as a barrier against pathogens and bacteria can penetrate more easily into the body of the quadruped.

You should therefore take the itching in your dog seriously and do something about its causes promptly. You can counteract small wounds very well with our Wound ointment.

Causes of itching in dogs

Itching can have very different causes in dogs. If you want to help your four-legged friend to get rid of his complaints, you must therefore first know the exact trigger.

Itching in dogs can have the following causes, among others:

  • Stress
  • feed allergies
  • Other allergies
  • parasite infestation
  • ear infections
  • skin fungus

Stress-related itching in the dog

A dog that scratches itself does not always actually suffer from itching. Scratching can also be a sign of stress.

For example, if your four-legged friend only scratches if he is surrounded by many other dogs or you demand something from him, it is only a so-called skipping action, with which he wants to reduce the perceived stress.

Food allergies as a trigger for itching in dogs

Feed allergies are increasingly common in dogs. In addition to digestive problems, they are particularly noticeable in affected animals through skin problems such as itching.

The trigger of such a feed allergy is usually the protein contained in the feed. By switching to our hypoallergenic dog food with insect protein from the larvae of the black soldier fly, the allergy and thus also the itching can usually be controlled quite easily.

Further allergies that cause itching in dogs

Anti grass mite spray

In addition to food allergies, there are two other allergies that dogs often suffer from, including severe itching.

The so-called flea allergy is triggered by protein compounds in the flea saliva. In order to treat it, it is necessary to eliminate the flea infestation in dogs as soon as possible.

If a dog suffers from atopic dermatitis, it reacts allergically when exposed to harmless substances from the environment, such as pollen. The treatment of atopic dermatitis is much more difficult than that of feed or flea allergies.

Itching in dogs due to parasite infestation

Parasites are another possible cause of itching in dogs. In addition to fleas, various types of mites, such as grass or manure mites, are also possible

Parasites are a serious problem for dogs. In addition to itching, they can have numerous other consequences for the four-legged friend and should therefore be treated immediately with the appropriate measures. Once the parasite infestation has been removed, the itching in the dog quickly disappears again.

We recommend using Bellfor Anti-Grasmite Spray or Marsavet Tick & Flea Protection for this purpose.

Ear infections as a trigger of itching in dogs

If your dog's itching is limited to the ears, it is very likely to suffer from ear infection. If this is the case, the four-legged friend will also often hold his head crooked or shake it and may even rub his ears on the ground because of the pain.

Ear infections in dogs can be caused by parasites such as ear mites, damage to the eardrum, errors in ear care or kidney problems.

Ear mite drops

Only very few owners of itchy ears should think of the latter. Untreated renal insufficiency can be fatal. For this reason, we recommend that you regularly detoxify the kidneys of your four-legged friend with Bellfor Kidney Power.

For cleaning your dog's ears, we recommend our ear care drops. If the animal suffers from an ear mite infestation, our ear mite drops are a good choice.

Itching in dogs due to skin fungus

Skin fungus is very contagious and can be transferred by the body contact with a diseased quadruped quite easily on another dog or also on humans.

The typical symptoms of skin fungus in dogs include itching, dandruff, redness and inflammation as well as circular bald spots in the affected body regions. The treatment of skin fungus is time-consuming and often takes several weeks.

Frequent bathing can increase itching in dogs.

If your dog suffers from itching, you should refrain from bathing the four-legged friend all too often. In this way you can mess up the moisture balance of your dog's skin and increase the discomfort even further.

This is especially true if you use unsuitable skin care products. If a bath is actually necessary, get a suitable dog shampoo for this purpose.

Itching in dogs - the most important thing at a glance

As you can see, itching in dogs can have very different causes. In order to be able to do something about the complaints of your four-legged friend, you must therefore first know the exact trigger.

Itching usually occurs in dogs in combination with other symptoms, such as the typical circular hair loss of a fungus.

Without treatment, excessive scratching causes the skin and coat of the four-legged friend to be increasingly affected. Therefore, you should take itching seriously and take the necessary measures. This may include a visit to the vet.
