How much does a dog cost a month?

Dogs are among the most popular pets of all. At the same time they are quite expensive. After all, the purchase of a pedigree dog quickly costs more than 1,000 euros.

It is not much different with the attitude of the four-legged friend. Also here expect the owner regular costs, which should not be underestimated.

But what exactly does a dog cost per month? We have investigated this question and explain to you in this article what you have to be prepared for.

Different costs depending on breed and size

How much does a dog cost per month

First of all, you should be aware that there is no blanket answer to the question about the monthly cost of a dog. Depending on the breed or size, considerable differences are possible.

After all, larger animals, for example, eat considerably more than their smaller counterparts. Likewise the veterinary surgeon costs and insurance contributions which can be expected are often noticeably higher.

Monthly costs for dog food

The purchase of dog food is one of the items that cause monthly costs for every dog. The exact amount depends on the type and quality of the food and the size of the dog.

Dry food is usually cheaper than wet food, but is not accepted by all dogs equally. At the same time, inferior food, as it is unfortunately still widespread, is usually much cheaper than high-quality products.

In addition, the daily feed requirement varies according to the size of the animal. Accordingly, in principle anything between 15 and 300 euros per month is possible.

If you pay attention to a good product quality, a medium-sized dog should cost you about 60 to 100 Euros per month.

Expert tip: why not save on dog food?

If you are wondering why you should spend more than absolutely necessary on your dog's food, consider the possible consequential costs that a bad diet of your four-legged friend entails.

Because high-quality dog food, such as that offered by the Bellfor range, causes significantly fewer feed intolerances and allergies. This is not only noticeable in the form of a happy and vital dog, but also in the long term with lower veterinary costs.

Costs for accessories

Accessories such as toys, leashes or a dog bed do not have to be bought every month. Nevertheless, these things are also associated with regular costs.

The quality and price differences are similar to those of dog food. With monthly costs of 10 to 15 euros, you should normally make do with the accessories for your dog.

Veterinary costs

Regular visits to the vet are a must for responsible dog owners. Vaccinations and general examinations cost about 10 to 20 Euro per month.

If your dog becomes seriously ill, however, these costs can rise significantly. Veterinarian bills of several hundred euros are not uncommon. A possibly necessary operation can cost even fast 1,000 euro and more.

Costs for the dog health insurance

In order to insure themselves against high veterinary costs, many owners take out a special dog health insurance. This takes over a majority of the treatment costs against a certain monthly amount in the case of illness.

Depending upon race and age of the dog as well as selected tariff the costs can range from 10 to 70 euro in the month. If you want to take out health insurance for a middle-aged animal, you should calculate a monthly premium of between 30 and 40 euros.

Costs for the dog tax

The dog tax is levied by the municipalities and can therefore vary depending on the place of residence. Normally, the annual taxes amount to approximately 100 to 200 Euros, which results in additional monthly costs of 12.50 to 25 Euros.

Some cities also levy less dog tax. For so-called list dogs it is however generally clearly more expensive and moves not rarely within a range of 800 to 900 euro in the year.

Costs for the dog owner's liability

The conclusion of a dog owner's liability is required by law in many federal states. But even where there is no obligation to insure, it is advisable to take out such a policy.

Finally, the dog owner's liability protects dog owners from the financial consequences of property damage and personal injury caused by their four-legged friend. With a premium of approximately 50 euros per year, or approximately four euros per month, the costs are manageable, so that there is basically no significant argument against the conclusion of such an insurance.

Optional costs for a dog school

Even if you don't have to go with your dog to a dog trainer for the rest of his life, it makes sense to attend a dog school at least at the beginning.

Especially beginners learn how to educate their four-legged friend correctly and what they have to pay attention to in everyday life with dogs. The costs can vary depending on the region. With one-time expenditures at a value of 200 to 300 euro you can count on however normally.

Optional costs for a dog pension

It is not always possible to take a dog with you on holiday. If you want to travel without your four-legged friend and nobody from your circle of friends can look after him, the accommodation in a dog pension is also possible alternatively.

This will cost you between 25 and 30 Euros per day, although the costs may vary.
