Water dogs

Water dogs are breeds that were once bred specifically for working in the water during hunting and fishing. Apart from their original use, some of these breeds have become popular family dogs.

Water Dogs Specialities

American water spaniel

Waterdogs are usually medium sized, whereby the different races show quite clear differences optically partially. A characteristic, that all water-dogs have in common, is the dense, wavy until curled fur, that usually shows a dark coloring and offers a good heat-protection to the quadrupeds with the work in the water.

Water dogs recognized by the FCI

The FCI leads water dogs in group 8, section 3 and recognizes different breeds as water dogs.

According to the FCI, the following seven breeds are currently water dogs:

  1. American Water Spaniel
  2. Barbet

  4. Irish Water Spaniel
  5. Lagotto Romagnolo

1. American Water Spaniel

The American Water Spaniel is a medium sized water dog from the USA. It reaches a shoulder height of up to 46 centimeters and a weight of about 20 kilograms. Its wavy to curly fur is dark brown and its physique muscular, but well proportioned. The American Water Spaniel is regarded as docile, alert and intelligent. Outside of North America, this water-dog is largely unknown.

2. Barbet

The Barbet is a water dog from France. The medium-sized animals are excellent swimmers and were originally used mainly for hunting birds. The dense and long coat of the Barbet provides excellent protection against wetness and cold. The breed standard permits numerous colors from black over gray and brown up to white, whereby also mottled animals are permitted.

3. Cão de Água Português (Portuguese Water Dog)

With a maximum weight of 25 kilograms and a shoulder height of up to 57 centimeters, the Portuguese Water Dog is one of the medium-sized dog breeds. He is an excellent swimmer whose job used to be to support fishermen in their work. Today, the Portuguese water dog is regarded as a child-friendly family dog, which is often used as a therapy dog, especially in the USA.

4. Irish Water Spaniel

The Irish Water Spaniel has a stocky physique and reached a shoulder height of up to 59 centimetres. Its dense brown coat is curly and naturally quite greasy. Among its conspicuous features is also its thin tail, which is only hairy at the base. The Irish Water Spaniel is extremely adaptive and must not only be challenged physically but also mentally.

5. Lagotto Romagnolo

The Lagotto Romagnolo is a water dog of Italian origin. It was bred already in the 17th century and reaches a size of up to 48 centimeters as well as a weight of 16 kilograms. The Lagotto Romagnolo is considered industrious and easy to grow. Due to its excellent sense of smell, it is often used as a truffle dog.

6. Perro de Agua Español (Spanish Water Dog)

the Spanish water-dog is widespread above all in South Spain, respectively Andalusia. It is considered to be intelligent and enthusiastic about work and can generally be educated well. Spanish water dogs build up a very close bond to humans and prove to be persistent playmates for children, which makes them excellent family dogs.

7. Wetterhoun (Frisian Water Dog)

The Wetterhoun is also called Frisian Water Dog and originates from the Netherlands. Thanks to its dense, oily coat, the Wetterhoun is ideal for working in the water. It is considered to be a workaholic and vigilant. His upbringing requires a healthy mixture of consistency and empathy.

Fur health with the water-dog

The coat of water dogs is usually quite long and needs therefore an adequate care, which can look different depending on the breed. In order to support the coat health, a sufficient nutrient supply of the animal is important independently of it.

We therefore recommend a dietary supplement with Bellfor Skin & Coat. The natural preparation contains high-quality proteins as well as vitamins and minerals and is ideally suited to provide your water dog's skin and coat with all important nutrients.

Water dogs for allergy sufferers

Most water dogs lose no or only a few hairs. This makes them a good choice for people who suffer from dog hair allergy and still want to keep a dog.

The right diet for water dogs

As with all dog breeds, a needs-based feeding also plays an important role with water dogs. In order to ensure this, you must consider numerous factors, such as the weight and age of your four-legged friend.

Some water dogs, such as the Perro de Agua Español, have an increased risk of suffering from hip dysplasia and other joint problems. To counteract this, we advise you to use Bellfor Joints & Bones with Ovopet if necessary.

The Bellfor nutrition concept offers you the right products for your water dog. The best thing to do is to use our online nutritionist and in just a few moments you will be shown individual feeding recommendations for your water dog.
