Hungarian hunting dog: dog food and breed portrait

The Hungarian Hound, also known as Magyar Vizsla Shorthair, is a large breed of dog from Hungary. The classic hunting dogs are managed by the FCI in group 7, section 1 (continental pointers).

Hungarian hunting dogs are characterized among other things by a high intelligence as well as an excellent fitness. They are primarily suitable for active and experienced dog owners. If their owners meet their needs, they certainly represent an option as a family dog.

History of the Hungarian Hound

The ancestors of the Hungarian Hound probably came from Asia and were used in Hungary several centuries ago.

However, targeted breeding of today's breed began only at the beginning of the 20th century. The Hungarian Vizsla Breeder Association was founded in 1920. The recognition of the Hungarian Hound by the FCI finally took place in 1936.

After the breeding lost its importance as a result of the two world wars, the popularity of the Hungarian hound after World War II increased again. At least 150 puppies are born in Germany every year.

Characteristics of the Hungarian Hound

The average life expectancy of the Hungarian Hound is between 12 and 15 years. Dogs reach a shoulder height of 58 to 64 centimeters, while bitches with 54 to 60 centimeters are usually a little smaller. The weight of the animals ranges from 22 to 30 kilograms.

The physique of the Hungarian hound is strikingly narrow, but very muscular. His legs are long and his back straight. His well-proportioned head with a moderate stop and adjacent lips blends harmoniously into the appearance of the four-legged friends.

The round eyes of the Hungarian Hound are medium sized and usually have a similar color to the coat. His low set ears are big and hang down the cheeks.

The flaxen-yellow to dark golds coat of Hungarian hunting dogs is short and mostly monochromatic. White badges on the chest are allowed though. A completely speckled coat is however undesirable according to breed standard.

The wiry haired Magyar Vizsla

In addition to the short-haired Hungarian hunting dog described here, there is also a wire-haired variant of the Magyar Vizsla. The Magyar Vizsla wire hair was created by the crossing of the German Wirehaired Hair.

Apart from its coat, it is very similar to the Hungarian hunting dog. However, he has a slightly more robust physique.

Magyar Vizsla shorthair essence and character

The Hungarian Hound is extremely clever and able to learn. At the same time, he turns out to be a very philanthropic and affectionate four-legged friend who attaches great importance to physical contact with his owner.

Consistent education and good socialization are essential in keeping a Hungarian hound. Since the breed is very sensitive, it should be excepted from excessive hardness.

The Magyar Vizsla shorthair is still ideal as a hunting dog. Thanks to its pronounced protective drive, however, it also represents a reliable watchdog.

Even an attitude as a family dog is quite possible. In this case, it is not only important to educate the four-legged well, but also to pay attention to needs-based employment.

If both are guaranteed, Hungarian hounds will usually handle other domestic dogs as well.

Activities with the Hungarian Hound

Hungarian hunting dogs are very athletic and have a strong urge to move. At the same time, the enduring four-legged friends are extremely intelligent, which is why they have to be challenged both physically and mentally.

This is especially true when a Hungarian hunting dog is kept as a pure family dog. Otherwise, the Magyar Vizsla shorthair can quickly become a problem dog.

Simple walks are not enough for the demanding four-legged friends. Instead, owners should make sure that the walk is as varied as possible.

Magyar Vizsla shorthair diseases

The Hungarian Hound is generally considered a robust dog breed. Nevertheless, Vizsla myositis is a breed-typical disease. If an animal suffers from Vizsla myositis, it weakens its bite muscles. This leads to swallowing problems and vomiting of foam.

As with many large dog breeds, the Hungarian Hound also has an increased risk of suffering stomach rotation and hip dysplasia.

If a Hungarian Vizsla Shorthair used for hunting, it is very important in addition to protecting the four-legged friends from parasites and to ensure adequate immunization. Above all, a vaccine against rabies is particularly important in this context.
