Afghan Hound (Afghan): dog food and breed portrait

Banner with Afghan Hound (Afghan)

The Afghan Hound is a British breed of dog whose origins are in Afghanistan. The FCI lists the Afghans in Group 10, Section 1 (long-haired or feathered greyhounds).

Afghan greyhounds are considered stubborn and have a strong hunting instinct. The breed is therefore especially suitable for experienced dog owners.

Origin of the Afghan

The Afghani Greyhound is originally from Afghanistan. There he was already used several thousand years ago for hunting mountain goats. Because of their inestimable value as hunting dogs, Afghans were always considered extremely precious and therefore could not be exported for a long time.

It was only towards the end of the 19th century that a few specimens came to Britain. There they started in the 1920s with the targeted breeding of the animals.

From this point on, the appearance of the Afghans became increasingly important, with the breeding was mainly paid attention to a longer and fuller coat.

In addition to pure exhibition lines, the Afghan was also bred for the popular dog races in England. Since a too long coat would interfere with the race, animals from the race lines usually have a much shorter coat.

In Germany there is the Afghan Greyhound since the early 1930s. The recognition by the FCI took place in 1961.

Characteristics of the Afghan hound

The life expectancy of the Afghan Hound is about 12 to 14 years. Male dogs reach a shoulder height of 68 to 74 centimeters. Bitches are usually a little smaller and only about 63 to 69 inches tall. The weight of the animals ranges between 20 and 30 kilos.

The physique of the Afghans should radiate elegance and dignity as well as strength and speed. The ratio between height and length is approximately 1: 1. The slender animals have a deep rib cage. Her head is long and not too narrow.

In addition to the stature typical of greyhounds, the long and silky coat is undoubtedly the most striking feature of the Afghans. The breed standard allows all colors.

Afghane Wesen und Charakter Afghan nature and character

As usual with greyhounds, Afghans at home prove to be extremely calm, gentle and inconspicuous. They usually get along well with children. Compared to other dogs and strangers, Afghan greyhounds tend to appear rather reserved and distant.
An excessive protective drive is not one of the character traits of the Afghan. However, they have a strong hunting instinct and are difficult to retrieve from a perceived prey outdoors. This fact often makes it impossible to let an Afghan Hound leash while walking without a leash.
In addition, Afghans are considered strong in character and have the reputation to be sometimes stubborn. Binder obedience is far from them. Instead, they always remain very independent. Their education requires patience and consistency. However, excessive hardness should be avoided. Because this does not go down well with the extremely sensitive animals.
Anyone who knows how to handle an Afghan Greyhound can undoubtedly enjoy a loyal companion. Beginners should opt for a different dog breed.

With us the meaning of the Afghans as hunting dog is very small. Instead, the breed is held primarily as an ordinary family and companion dog.
However, those who are considering the purchase of an Afghan hound should be aware that the animals have a high need for exercise. A corresponding load by regular running training or even the participation in races is in any case a good idea.
The strengths of the Afghan are mainly sprints over shorter distances. In everyday life, however, it is also possible to take the dogs while jogging or cycling.

Afghan diseases

Unfortunately, as with many pedigree dogs, Afghans also have an increased risk of some race-specific diseases.
These include, inter alia, the so-called afferent myelopathy, a hereditary disease of the spinal cord. A disease of Afghan myelopathy leads to complete paralysis of the limbs. However, it can be largely excluded by targeted selection in breeding.
In addition, the Afghani greyhound is one of the breeds where tartar forms very easily. Regular dental care is essential in these dogs to avoid problems.

Other health problems that can occur in Afghans are in particular:
