Shorthaired dogs

Budding dog owners are first of all faced with the question of which breed suits them best. Shorthaired dogs are often preferred to their long-haired peers. This may be due to the fact that a long coat is usually associated with a higher maintenance effort.

As there are also a large number of animals with a short coat among the approximately 350 dog breeds recognized by the FCI, finding a puppy that meets the wishes of its future owner should normally not be a problem.

To help you with your choice, here are some popular short haired dogs in different sizes.

Pug

Little short-haired dogs

Small dog breeds usually have a higher life expectancy than their larger conspecifics. In addition, their attitude is already alone due to the lower feed requirements usually a little cheaper.

Among the small breeds, there are a number of short-haired dogs to choose from. If you want to buy a compact four-legged with short fur, you should therefore find it easily.

For example, the following small short-haired dogs are particularly popular:

  • English bulldog
  • French bulldog
  • Jack Russell Terrier
  • Pug

English bulldog

With a shoulder height of up to 40 centimeters and a weight of more than 20 kilos, the English Bulldog is among the larger specimens among the small breeds. The short-haired dogs are considered very gentle and comfortable. However, the latter often leads to obesity and the associated consequences for health.

French bulldog

The French Bulldog gets up to 35 inches tall and weighs around 14 pounds. One of the most characteristic features of these short-haired dogs is undoubtedly their large ears reminiscent of a bat. Although French Bulldogs may be stubborn, they are ideal family pets.

Jack Russell Terrier

The Jack Russell Terrier weighs about five to six kilos and reaches a shoulder height of no more than 30 centimeters. Despite their small size, the short-haired dogs are characterized by a barely quenching urge to move. For this reason, the Jack Russell Terrier is especially suitable for athletic active holder.

Pug

The Pug is a classic little society dog with a short coat. It reaches a weight of about eight kilograms and a size of up to 30 centimeters. The cozy animals are considered charming and intelligent. However, the breeding of short-haired dogs is increasingly criticized due to their short snouts and associated health problems.

Medium sized short haired dogs

Of course, not every owner wants a dog that is barely bigger than a cat. Many people prefer a bigger size and prefer one of the medium sized dog breeds.

Again, there are a number of short-haired dogs. If you want to be a medium-sized four-legged friend with a short coat that is as easy to care for as possible, you will have enough breeds to choose from.

For example, the following medium sized short-haired dogs are particularly popular:

  • Appenzell Mountain dog
  • Beagle
  • Bullterrier
  • Dalmatian

Appenzell Mountain dog

Appenzeller Sennenhunde reach a shoulder height of up to 56 centimeters and a weight of 22 to 32 kilos. Her short coat is tricolor, with black or dark brown as the primary color. Appenzeller Sennenhunde are willing to learn and have a high urge to move. In Switzerland, they are still used as herding dogs.

Beagle

With a shoulder height of up to 41 centimeters and a weight of 9 to 11 kilograms, the Beagle is one of the medium-sized short-haired dogs. He was originally bred as a hunting dog, but enjoys now also as a family dog of increasing popularity. Anyone who chooses a beagle, should know, however, that this breed needs a lot of sprawl and employment.

Bullterrier

Bull Terriers are between 45 and 55 inches tall and can reach a weight of up to 30 pounds. The medium-sized short-haired dogs have a bad reputation and are on the racial list in some states. With the right education, however, they prove to be extremely loyal and loving animals.

Dalmatian

The Dalmatian is mainly known for its short white coat with the characteristic black or brown polka dots. Adult animals reach a withers height of up to 62 centimeters and a weight of up to 32 kilograms. Anyone who chooses one of these shorthaired dogs should definitely pay attention to a low-purine diet due to a genetic defect in Dalmatians.

Big short-haired dogs

In addition to small and medium-sized short-haired dogs, there are also various large breeds of dogs with a short coat. This includes even some of the largest and heaviest dogs ever.

If a dog can not be big enough for you and the four-legged friend should have the shortest possible coat at the same time, that does not pose a problem either.

Shorthaired dogs

Particularly popular are, for example, the following large short-haired dogs:

  • German Mastiff
  • Doberman Mastiff
  • Akita Inu essence and character
  • Rhodesian Ridgeback

Great Dane

According to the breed standard, male Great Dane achieve a shoulder height of at least 80 centimeters. This makes the imposing short-haired dogs one of the largest dog breeds ever.

Nonetheless, Great Danes are generally good-natured and build a close bond with their owner. Those who choose this breed should pay attention to so-called Liegeschwielen and joint problems such as hip dysplasia.

Doberman

The Doberman is a large short-haired dog breed from Germany. He is up to 72 inches tall and is characterized among other things by his diligence.

This fact helps Dobermans become popular police and military service dogs. If a Doberman is to be considered a family dog, a proper education is very important. For beginners these short-haired dogs are not suitable.

Mastiff

With a weight of up to 100 kilos, the mastiff is considered the heaviest dog in the world. The massive animals are generally quite calm and relaxed. However, due to their size, good education of the short-haired dogs is essential. Unfortunately, the breed has developed over time a tendency to various health problems. These include heart problems, hip dysplasia and eye diseases.

Rhodesian Ridgeback

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a large short-haired dog breed from Africa. There, the animals, which can reach a size of up to 69 centimeters, were originally bred for hunting large game. Today, the docile and industrious animals are also often used as rescue dogs. For beginners, these short-haired dogs are not suitable.

Skin and coat health in short-haired dogs

A short coat does not necessarily mean that a dog can not suffer from skin and coat problems. Even though grooming in the form of brushes or combs proves to be uncomplicated for short-haired dogs, it is essential to support the best possible health of the animal.

We recommend natural dog food from Bellfor for this purpose. Because our high-quality products contain neither artificial additives nor wheat. This ensures good digestibility and optimal nutrient supply and helps to counteract problems with the skin or the coat.

In addition, if necessary, we recommend a supplement with Bellfor Skin & Fur. The natural preparation contains many valuable nutrients and can also make a valuable contribution to skin and coat health in short-haired dogs.

In case of acute skin problems such as sore paws or lying legs you will also find in our range of natural care products for dogs.
