Detecting heartburn in dogs and treating it naturally

Hund liegend

Just like humans, dogs can also suffer from heartburn. The associated complaints are extremely unpleasant for our four-legged friends and should therefore not go unnoticed.

In the following we explain to you, which causes heartburn can have with the dog and with which symptoms it makes itself noticeable. You will also find out which treatment and prevention measures are sensible.

How does heartburn develop in dogs?

Normally the food reaches the stomach via the esophagus, where the decomposition of the food begins. A sphincter muscle prevents the stomach contents from entering the esophagus.

However, if this sphincter muscle is weakened, for example due to acidosis of the stomach, it can no longer fulfil its actual function. As a result, the food mush and stomach acid flow back into the oesophagus and the dog suffers from heartburn.

Possible causes of heartburn in dogs

Apart from a fundamental weakening of the sphincter muscle at the stomach entrance, heartburn in dogs can be triggered or at least promoted by various other factors.

These include hormonal imbalances and excessive stress that the four-legged friend has to cope with. In addition, heartburn in dogs is often a sign of gastritis.

In addition, especially the diet has a great influence on the health of the stomach. In addition to large portions, incorrect composition and inadequate quality of the food can cause problems such as heartburn in dogs.

Detecting heartburn in dogs

Unfortunately, your dog cannot tell you that he suffers from heartburn. This and the unspecific symptoms, which can also indicate many other complaints, sometimes make it difficult to detect heartburn in the dog.

Among other things, the following symptoms may be a sign of heartburn:

  • Excessive eating of grass
  • Excessive licking in itself and the environment
  • Coughing and choking
  • Regular vomiting
  • Discomfort when swallowing
  • Frequent burping
  • Intensive munching
  • Strong salivation

Dogs with heartburn should go to the vet.

In case of the mentioned symptoms we advise you to make an appointment with a vet. After all, it is quite possible that the symptoms are not caused by more or less harmless heartburn, but by a serious dog disease.

Whether this is the case and whether appropriate treatment measures are necessary, however, only an expert can tell you with certainty.

In addition to a conversation with you and a general examination of the four-legged friend, the veterinarian can perform a gastroscopy and an oesophageal endoscopy to get to the bottom of the problem.

Drinking can reduce heartburn in dogs

In order to relieve heartburn in your dog, you should make sure that your four-legged friend drinks sufficiently. The water dilutes the stomach acid and can help reduce your dog's discomfort.

If necessary, you can give your dog herbal tea instead of water. This can also help to calm the stomach of the four-legged friend.

Dogs with heartburn often eat grass

Dogs that suffer from heartburn often eat grass. This helps them to regulate the stomach acid level and can often help to alleviate the animal's symptoms.

If you notice your dog eating grass while walking, let him do so. However, make sure that the feeding of grass does not get the upper hand and that your four-legged friend is limited to places where there is no risk of exposure to pesticides or other harmful substances.

Counteract heartburn in dogs through diet

If you want to counteract heartburn in your dog permanently, the right diet is essential. The food of the four-legged friend should be as easily digestible as possible and should not contain any unsuitable ingredients.

Especially artificial additives as well as a high content of wheat can lead to intolerances in your dog and sooner or later contribute to heartburn and numerous other complaints.

By paying attention to good quality and a low carbohydrate content when buying food, these consequences can often be avoided from the outset and existing complaints can be reliably alleviated.

In addition, we advise dogs with heartburn to refrain from large portions and to distribute the daily food ration over several small meals instead.
