Dog Frisbee: fast-paced trend sport for dogs

Dog Frisbee

Dog Frisbee, or discdogging, is a popular dog sport that originally comes from the USA and is now becoming increasingly popular.

Dog Frisbee was born on 05.08.1974. On this day, the American Alex Stein and his male Ashley ran in the break of a baseball game unauthorized way on the playing field, where the four-legged friend in front of running cameras sensational jumps to catch the Frisbee disc thrown by his owner.

How Dog Frisbee works, which disciplines are distinguished in competitions and whether your dog is suitable for this sport, you will learn in the following. We will also explain why an appropriate diet is so important for your four-legged friend who is active in Dog Frisbee.

What is Dog Frisbee?

In short, Dog Frisbee is simply about you throwing a Frisbee disc at your dog and he catches it. To make the whole thing as varied as possible, you can of course use different throwing techniques and throw the Frisbee disc behind your back or out of the squat, for example.

In competitions, Dog Frisbee distinguishes between the following three disciplines:

  • Freestyle
  • Mini distance
  • Long Distance

Freestyle Dog Frisbee

At Freestyle Dog Frisbee the participants have two minutes each for their performance to present an individual choreography. There are no specific rules that have to be observed during the freestyle.

However, it is important that the different tricks and throwing techniques are combined in such a way that the overall picture is as harmonious as possible. The whole thing is accompanied by suitable music and up to seven Frisbee discs may be used.

For the evaluation the judges of the Freestyle Dog Frisbee consider among other things the difficulty, the throwing technique, the captured throws as well as the choreography in general and the interaction between dog and human being.

Mini Distance Dog Frisbee

The Mini Distance Dog Frisbee gives participants 60 or 90 seconds to collect points. For this purpose, a playing field is marked out on which different scoring zones are located. Points are awarded for all Frisbee slices caught, whereby the number of points depends, among other things, on the throwing distance and the evaluation zone in which the dog is catching.

Long Distance Dog Frisbee

The Long Distance Dog Frisbee has no competition time. Instead, each participant has three throwing attempts. The aim of this discipline of disc dogging is that the dog catches a Frisbee disc that has been thrown as far as possible.

Which dogs can participate in the Dog Frisbee

Which dogs can participate in the Dog Frisbee?

In principle, any dog that is big enough to catch the Frisbee can try its hand at the Dog Frisbee. However, you should only practice this dog sport if your four-legged friend is healthy. Especially animals suffering from joint diseases like hip dysplasia are not suitable for discdogging.

Apart from that you should only use Dog Frisbee with adult dogs. Because in young animals joints and bones are not yet fully developed, so many jumping can quickly lead to permanent damage.

Last but not least, you should always make sure that your dog doesn't overwind when jumping Dog Frisbee. Of course, having fun training is a great thing. But if you notice that your four-legged friend spans the bow, it is definitely time for a breather to come to rest.

The right disc for disc dogging

If you want to try out Dog Frisbee with your four-legged friend, you should definitely buy a suitable Frisbee disc for this purpose. Conventional Frisbees are often hard and fragile, which is why your dog can easily injure himself when catching them.

Special Frisbee discs for disc dogging are a bit lighter, soft and flexible, so that your dog can catch them safely with his mouth without the disc splitting and causing injury.

Dog Frisbee and a diet to suit your needs

Despite all the joy you get from playing together at Dog Frisbee, you should always bear in mind that the physical activities for your four-legged friend bring with them an additional load as well as an increased energy consumption.

In order to avoid negative effects of dog sport, it is therefore particularly important to ensure a diet tailored to your needs. For dogs who are active in sports, such as Dog Frisbee, we recommend feeding them Bellfor Premium PUR Aktiv.

The gluten-free dry food not only provides your dog with an extra portion of meat and fish, but also with easily digestible carbohydrates from rice and corn as a source of quickly available energy for Dog Frisbee.

Food supplements for optimal Dog Frisbee performance

A high-quality dog food represents the ideal basis for a species-appropriate nutrition of your sporty active four-legged friend, but is not sufficient alone to supply your dog optimally with all necessary nutrients.

We therefore recommend that you supplement the daily diet of your dog active in discdogging with the following products:

  • Bellfor Fitness Powder as a supplier of additional vitamins and minerals as well as important amino acids for the effective promotion of regeneration and for the preservation of the muscles.
  • Bellfor Joints & Bones with Ovopet to protect your dog's joints from the high stresses of Dog Frisbee's jumps and avoid musculoskeletal complaints
