Detect and treat Clostridia in dogs

Clostridia in dogs

Clostridia are a very common cause of digestive problems in dogs. It is estimated that more than 20 percent of all diarrheal diseases can be attributed to an infection with Clostridium.

To find out exactly what Clostridium is, how it can infect your dog and what symptoms it causes, read on. We will also explain how you can support the veterinary treatment of Clostridia in your dog in a natural way.

What are Clostridia?

Clostridia is a genus of highly resistant bacteria that includes over 100 different species. As environmental germs they are found virtually everywhere. For example, some species live naturally in the gut flora of humans, dogs and other higher organisms.

The presence of certain clostridia in the small intestine of dogs is completely normal and does not pose a problem at first.

However, it can happen that the intestinal flora of the four-legged friend gets out of balance and the clostridia in the animal's digestive tract multiply strongly.

For this purpose the clostridia form spores in the dog's intestines. This, in combination with the toxins produced in the process, leads to a variety of complaints and even life-threatening conditions.

Causes of clostridia in dogs

Clostridia can not only multiply due to imbalances in the dog's intestinal flora, but can also be ingested orally. This is possible, for example, by eating soil, contact with the excrements of already infected conspecifics or by eating dog food that is infested with Clostridia.

Raw meat used for the barking of the dog is also a common source of Clostridia in this context. This is because studies have shown that the germ load is often particularly high there, so barfing dogs is always associated with a certain risk.

Whether the bacteria ultimately succeed in spreading and actually cause complaints in the affected quadruped depends on various factors.

The following factors in particular can promote the growth of clostridia in dogs:

  • A weak immune system
  • A prolonged administration of antibiotics
  • A change of food
  • Already existing infections with other bacteria
  • Excessive stress

Clostridia can cause a number of complaints in dogs and sometimes have serious consequences. Symptoms include in particular mucous diarrhoea, which can be bloody. In addition, affected dogs often vomit and often suffer from severe flatulence and stomach pain.

How long the symptoms last and the consequences of Clostridia for the dog vary from individual to individual. In the case of a mild course, the symptoms can certainly subside after about a week.

However, it is just as possible that the Clostridia cause chronic complaints and that massive diarrhoea occurs again and again, through which the animal increasingly loses weight and the general condition of the four-legged friend deteriorates further and further.

Diagnosing Clostridia in dogs

If you suspect that your dog is suffering from diarrhoea due to clostridia, we recommend that you consult a vet. He or she will be able to examine a faecal sample to confirm your suspicion.

The veterinarian can also rule out other reasons for the symptoms. Because diarrhoea can be caused by many different reasons. Clostridia are only one of them and for a successful treatment a clear diagnosis of the exact disease is essential.

Treating dogs with Clostridium

The treatment of Clostridia in your dog depends largely on the severity of the symptoms. If your dog has already lost a lot of fluid, an infusion may be necessary to compensate.

It is also common practice to give your dog antibiotics to control the annoying bacteria. Apart from that, a high-fiber diet seems to have a positive effect on the course of the disease in many dogs.

This is probably mainly due to the fact that dietary fibres have a positive influence on intestinal health. The choice of the right food is therefore of particular importance for dogs with clostridia.

To this end, we recommend that you rely on our wholesome Landgut-Schmaus with insect protein from the larvae of the black soldier fly. The food is particularly easy to digest and is therefore ideal for dogs suffering from Clostridia.

Bellfor Shiimun Gastro for dogs with clostridia

To counteract the clostridia in your dog, we recommend that you supplement your veterinary treatment with Bellfor Shiimun Gastro. The natural preparation based on shiitake and other selected ingredients such as sage, aniseed and turmeric reliably promotes your dog's healthy digestion.

A dietary supplement with Bellfor Shiimun Gastro reduces symptoms such as diarrhoea, flatulence and vomiting and can thus help your dog to survive the infection with clostridia as quickly as possible and without lasting consequences.

At the same time, Bellfor Shiimun Gastro is free of artificial additives and is therefore very easily digestible, so that you do not put additional strain on your dog's organism, which is already weakened by the clostridia.
