Eventing sport (IPO) for dogs

Eventing sport (IPO)

The vast majority of all dogs today are kept as pure family dogs. In order to avoid a permanent underchallenge of these four-legged friends, it is important to provide for a species-appropriate occupation.

Participation in dog sports is particularly suitable for this purpose. Because it offers suitable disciplines for practically all breeds, in which they can optimally play out their natural strengths.

The so-called eventing sport according to IPO proves to be particularly challenging. It is regarded as the oldest dog sport at all and offers a welcome change to their everyday life as a family dog, especially for classic utility dogs.

The elements of eventing with dogs

Following the short form for the international test regulations for utility dogs, in which the rules within the FCI are laid down, the eventing sport is often simply called IPO.

The individual sport disciplines, in which your quadruped can prove its abilities in the utility dog sport, are called departments. They cover the areas of subordination, tracking work and protection service.

Subordination

Subordination is about your four-legged friend showing that he is following your listening signs exactly and attentively. This includes commands such as sitting, sitting and standing out of motion, retrieval exercises as well as line handling and free following.

Tracking work

Within the scope of tracking work, your dog can score points with his sense of smell in the eventing sport. His task is to follow tracks with a length of 400 to 800 steps and to detect up to three different objects.

Protection service

The protection service checks whether your dog obeys even in borderline cases. For this purpose, the four-legged friend must first track down an alleged perpetrator and then guard him and prevent him from fleeing or even a robbery.

Of course, this is not about making your dog keen. Instead, he must show a high level of nerves and prove that communication with his handler works smoothly even in stressful situations.

Which dogs are suitable for IPO?

Which dogs are suitable for IPO

IPO is not exclusively reserved for classic utility dogs such as the German Shepherd. In principle, all dogs can, at least in theory, take part in eventing sports, provided they have successfully passed their companion dog test.

However, for some breeds it is nevertheless advisable to refrain from IPO. This is especially true for particularly heavy and large dog breeds such as the Newfoundlander and other animals where, due to anatomical peculiarities, caution is required for physical activities such as jumping.

After all, IPO should ultimately be fun for your dog, despite all the ambition that you as a dog handler certainly have, and not lead to complaints such as damage to the joints.

Is working dog sport dangerous?

Many people are critical of the topic of utility dog sports. In this context, it is often pointed out, for example, that the participating four-legged friends are made keenly aware of the protection service and thus represent a danger.

As long as the sport is practised responsibly, however, this fear is completely unfounded. Because in truth IPO eventing sport offers many advantages and ultimately even has a positive effect on the dog's behaviour.

Why IPO eventing is a good choice for dogs

IPO eventing promotes and challenges your dog both physically and mentally. On the one hand, this ensures that your four-legged friend is working to capacity and, on the other hand, helps to strengthen your bond with each other.

The tracking work trains your dog's sense of smell and improves his ability to concentrate. The subordination department helps to improve your relationship, train your dog's obedience and encourage his willingness to learn.

In the protection service, your dog learns to prove his nerves and to trust and obey you even in borderline situations. In this way, utility dog sports can make a valuable contribution to a problem-free everyday life with your dog.

IPO eventing as competition

The possibilities of participation in the eventing sport according to IPO are not only limited to the visit of a dog school with corresponding offers. In addition, competitions in utility dog sports up to the annual IPO World Championship are held regularly.

Those who take the subject of eventing seriously and complete the necessary IPO tests with their dog will have the opportunity to compete with other dog handlers, either alone or in team competitions, and to demonstrate the skills of their own four-legged friend.

The right food for working dog sports

If you are out and about with your dog in eventing, you should be aware that your four-legged friend has special needs with regard to his diet. This is because the additional physical activities lead, among other things, to increased energy consumption, which you must cover with the food.

We recommend our gluten-free dry food Premium PUR Aktiv for this purpose. This high-quality food contains a particularly large amount of meat and fish and also provides your dog with important energy in the form of well tolerated carbohydrates from maize and rice.

Dogs active in IPO eventing need additional proteins

Apart from covering the overall increased energy requirement, it makes sense to supply your dog with additional proteins during IPO eventing in order to meet the increased protein requirement of your athletically active four-legged friend.

The best way to do this is with our Fitness Powder. This natural food supplement contains insect protein as a source of all essential amino acids as well as dried bananas and chia seeds as suppliers of valuable vitamins and minerals.
