Dog Diving: dog sport for water rats

Dog Diving

The choice of different disciplines in dog sports is large, so that there is a suitable employment possibility for almost every quadruped. One sport that is becoming increasingly popular with dog owners is Dog Diving, which originally comes from the USA.

What dog diving is all about, which breeds are suitable for it and how you and your four-legged friend can find the right introduction to this trend sport, you will learn in the following. We also explain what you need to pay attention to when feeding your dog active in Dog Diving.

What is Dog Diving?

It should come as no surprise that this dog sport has to do with water. In short, Dog Diving is about your dog jumping from a ramp into the water as far as possible. It is of course important that the pool is deep and long enough. After all, experienced dogs can jump eight or nine metres in Dog Diving.

Dog Diving is a quite young dog sport, which originated in the year 1997 in the USA, but has spread from there quite fast also with us and in which meanwhile also more and more often competitions are held.

Different disciplines at Dog Diving

Dog Diving is not limited to the pure long jump, but offers with a total of three different disciplines a lot of variety for dogs who feel comfortable in the water.

These disciplines are available at Dog Diving:

  • big air
  • extreme vertical
  • speed retrieve

Big air

Big Air is the most common discipline in dog diving and the only one in Germany where tournaments are currently being held. In this variant it is all about the dog jumping as far as possible. To ensure a fair competition, the participating four-legged friends are divided into animals above and below 50 centimetres withers.

At Big Air, the dogs have a carpeted run-up with a length of at least four metres at their disposal. The jump ramp has a height of 20 centimetres. The water pool must be at least 1.20 metres deep and usually measures approximately 5 x 10 metres.

Each dog has two minutes time in which he must complete two evaluation jumps as well as an additional trial jump. To motivate the four-legged friend to jump, the owner may throw any toy into the water. However, the use of dog treats is prohibited, as is pushing the four-legged friend.

Speed retrieve

Extreme vertical

Extreme Vertical is a variant of Dog Diving that is very popular in the USA. In contrast to Big Air, this discipline is not about jumping distance, but about height. The participating dogs have to jump into the air and catch a toy thrown into the air. The height is increased with every run until the winner is finally determined.

Speed retrieve

The third discipline in dog diving is called speed retrieve. Just like Extreme Vertical, this variation has not yet found too many followers in Germany. In Speed-Retrieve the dog has the task to retrieve a dummy from the opposite side of the pool in the shortest possible time.

For which dogs is Dog Diving suitable?

Theoretically almost every healthy dog can participate in Dog Diving. There are no breed restrictions and the stress on the joints is also limited compared to many other dog sports.

However, not every dog is enthusiastic about jumping into the water with a run-up. In practice, Dog Diving is therefore especially suitable for dog breeds that love water by nature. These include Labradors and Golden Retrievers as well as various water dogs such as the Cão de Água Português.

If your dog is afraid of the water and does not want to try dog diving of his own free will, you should never force him to do so and push him into the water. This will only increase his reluctance to get wet rather than motivate him.

Good health is a must for Dog Diving

Of course, you should only participate in Dog Diving with your dog if there are no health problems that speak against it. Animals with joint diseases or cardiovascular problems, for example, should stay on land just as much as dogs suffering from a chronic ear infection.

Your introduction to Dog Diving

If you would like to try Dog Diving with your dog, you will need a sufficiently large and deep water pool and a suitable platform for the jump.

Unless you have a swimming pool of appropriate size, this dog sport is not suitable for home use and you will need to contact your local dog diving facility instead.

Regardless of this, you should definitely introduce your dog to jumping into the water in a playful way and, especially at the beginning, make sure that he doesn't have any problems when swimming. After all, Dog Diving is mainly about fun and not about preparing your four-legged friend for the first competition by drilling in the shortest possible time.

Dog Diving and the right nutrition

For active four-legged friends who spend a lot of time doing dog sports such as dog diving, it is particularly important to have a diet that is tailored to their needs in order to avoid possible health consequences. In this context, make sure that your dog is provided with sufficient energy for the additional physical strain via his food.

For this purpose we recommend feeding your dog our gluten-free Premium PUR Aktiv dry food with easily digestible carbohydrates from rice and corn and a high proportion of meat and fish.

It is also a good idea to supply your dog with additional proteins. In order to cover the increased protein requirement caused by dog sports and to support regeneration, we recommend supplementing your dog's diet with Bellfor Fitness Powder

This natural preparation provides your four-legged friend with all essential amino acids as well as important minerals and vitamins and is therefore ideally suited to supplement the daily diet of your dog who is active when dog diving.
