Getting puppies house-trained: this is how it works for your dog

Getting puppies house-trained

It is a big mistake to think that puppies do not need any education yet and after moving into their new home they can do what they want for a few weeks. Because young dogs learn much faster than their older conspecifics. For this reason you should start training your dog as early as possible. In the beginning, this naturally includes house-training your puppy.

How you can best do this, why punishment is not a solution and how long it usually takes to get your puppy house-trained is explained below.

How quickly does a puppy become house-trained?

If you want to get your puppy house-trained, you'll need patience. Even though some dogs learn very quickly where they can relieve themselves, others can take weeks or even months to do so. You should also be aware that it's not until the 14th week of life that young dogs are able to control their sphincters. Until that time, you can't expect your puppy to be house-trained either.

Nevertheless, you can be sure that with a little support, your four-legged friend will soon be able to get rid of his puppy just by going outside. After all, dogs are basically very clean and don't want to deliberately dirty their home. So it's only a matter of time before you get your puppy house-trained.

Puppies often need to relieve themselves

How often a dog needs to relieve itself depends on various factors. One of them is age. While it is usually sufficient for adult animals to go to the toilet every three to four hours, you should go out with a puppy about every two hours.

Learn to understand your puppy's behaviour

In order to get your puppy house-trained and to prevent him from getting loose in the flat, it is important to keep an eye on his behaviour and interpret it correctly. If you notice that your little four-legged friend is becoming increasingly restless, this is usually a sure sign that it's time for a short walk.

The better you succeed in understanding your young dog's behaviour in this context, the less likely it is that mishaps will occur and the quicker you will get your puppy house-trained.

Puppies need a fixed place to loosen

Just like humans, dogs also appreciate fixed habits in their daily routine. This also applies, among other things, to doing their business. So if you're in the process of house-training your puppy, a fixed place to loosen up is helpful in addition to regular walks.

This can be in your garden or in a nearby green area. However, your dog should be permanently allowed to relieve himself there. Once a place has been established, it is difficult for an adult four-legged friend to get used to it again.

In order to get a puppy house-trained, praise should not be missing

Praise should not be missing

You can expect it to take a moment for your puppy to relieve himself in the space you have provided. This is perfectly normal, so don't rush your puppy at all.

Once he's done his business, it's advisable to give him plenty of praise. In this way, he will quickly learn what you expect of him and the waiting time will be shorter and shorter.

Introduce a fixed solution word

In addition, we recommend the introduction of a fixed command for solving. For example, say "Mach" every time while your quadruped is relieving himself.

After a while, you can even get your dog to relieve himself on command using the solution word. If you are in a particular hurry, this can prove extremely useful.

First solve, then play

If you are in the process of house-training your puppy, it is very important that you still give him a moment to play and sniff around after he has been released. Because if you don't do that, your four-legged friend may deliberately stick to his business so that he doesn't have to go home again after just a few minutes.

Puppies do not last a whole night

Considering that your puppy will need to get loose about every two hours, it's probably only natural that you'll need to plan for night walks as well.

To ensure that you wake up in time, we recommend that you let your puppy sleep near you at night. This will make it easier for you to notice when he makes himself noticed. It's also advisable to keep all the necessary walking utensils, such as your keys and leash, within easy reach.

Do not punish your puppy in case of mishap

Until you get your puppy house-trained, it can happen again and again that a small mishap happens to the young four-legged friend in the flat. But even if you are annoyed by the stain on the floor, you should never punish your dog for it.

After all, you can be sure that your four-legged friend has not wilfully relieved himself at home, but that he simply could not keep it up. To get your puppy house-trained, you should therefore make sure you take him out in good time in future.

If you catch him in the act, we recommend that you pick him up without scolding and take him outside to his release place. If he relieves himself there again, praise him extensively.

Afterwards, clean up his mishap in the apartment thoroughly so that no scents are left behind. This could signal to your young dog that he may also release himself there in the future.

This helps against diarrhoea in your puppy

We regularly receive calls from new dog owners asking us why their puppy has diarrhoea, especially in the first period after moving in.

The reason for this is the interaction of two factors. Firstly, moving to a new home causes enormous stress for the young four-legged friend and secondly, the puppy's immune system is not yet fully developed.

Similar to a small child, who often has a cold in the beginning in kindergarten, this often leads to diarrhoea in puppies.

To counteract this, we recommend a dietary supplement with Bellfor Immune Junior.

This easily digestible powder provides your little four-legged friend with a perfectly balanced mixture of nutrients and thus helps to support your puppy's immune system in a natural way.
