Turmeric as a food supplement for your dog

Kurkuma als Nahrungsergänzung für Ihren Hund

Turmeric has been used in India for at least 4,000 years and is still considered one of the most important spices there. But turmeric can do much more than just refine the taste of food. It also has a positive effect on a number of health problems.

This applies to both you and your dog, which is why turmeric is an important component of some of the food supplements in our range.

Turmeric in the interest of science

So-called superfoods have become very popular in recent years. In many cases, however, their actual use is hardly proven, which is why significant benefits from their consumption may at least be doubted.

With turmeric, however, the situation is different. The spice has been an integral part of Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. In addition, the effect of turmeric has also increasingly aroused the interest of scientists.

The search for the active ingredient curcumin contained in turmeric alone in the Pubmed database currently produces more than 14,000 hits. The results of the scientific studies confirm at least some of the suspected effects and thus show that dogs, among others, can also benefit from turmeric.

How does turmeric work?

Turmeric is said to help with digestive problems, joint problems such as osteoarthritis, liver disease and allergies, among other things. The fact that this is quite possible can be explained above all by the (scientifically proven) anti-inflammatory effect of turmeric.

This is because many illnesses are initially caused by chronic inflammation that was not counteracted in time.

In addition, the active ingredients contained in turmeric, such as curcumin, prove to be powerful antioxidants that can protect the body of humans and dogs from free radicals and prevent damage to the cells.

Curcuma for dogs

As a dietary supplement, the administration of turmeric to dogs is especially useful to support digestion. If your dog is suffering from diarrhoea or intestinal inflammation, for example, a turmeric-containing preparation can help to alleviate these symptoms.

In addition, turmeric is particularly suitable for supporting your dog's immune system. When administered as a dietary supplement, turmeric can also have a positive effect on chronic skin diseases and allergies, as well as helping to regenerate the liver.

Dogs with osteoarthritis can also benefit from curcumin's pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties, so supplementation can potentially provide a significant improvement in the quality of life for dogs with joint disease.

Dosing turmeric correctly for dogs

Curcuma is now also quite common in Germany and is easily available both in powder form and as a whole tuber. The one or other dog owner could therefore get the idea to simply mix the spice into his four-legged friend's food.

However, the whole thing is not quite that simple. First of all, the tubers contain very little of the most important active ingredient curcumin, of which only a small proportion is absorbed by the body at all.

In addition, there is a high probability that your dog will not touch his food due to its unfamiliar taste.

It is therefore better to rely on dietary supplements with turmeric for dogs, such as those available from Bellfor. This has the additional advantage that your four-legged friend will benefit not only from the effects of turmeric, but also from other selected ingredients.
