Small Münsterländer: dog food and breed portrait

Small Münsterländer

The Small Münsterländer is a medium sized dog from Germany. It is a classic hunting dog, which is appreciated by hunters mainly because of its versatility and reliability. Thanks to his friendly and balanced character, the Small Münsterländer, which is led by the FCI in Group 7, Section 1 (Continental Pointing Dogs), is also suitable as a family dog.

History of the Small Münsterländer

The pure breeding of the Small Münsterländer was started approximately between the years 1902 and 1907. The forester Edmund Löns, who was responsible for breeding, first called the dogs Heidewachtel and used bird dogs available at that time for breeding.

For a long time there was disagreement about the name of the breed, which is why individual clubs split off and then reunited. Edmund Löns actually always preferred the name Heidewachtel. However, he could not assert himself with it in the end.

In 1934 the two associations Deutscher Wachtel Klub and Verein Münsterländer Vorstehhunde joined together again after a temporary separation and finally agreed on the name Small Münsterländer Vorstehhund.

The Small Münsterländer is still a popular hunting dog, which is currently used for hunting in forests, especially in Norway, France and Sweden. However, over the years he has also developed into a popular family dog, not least due to the attractive appearance of the breed.

Characteristics of the Small Münsterländer

Among the German pointing dogs, the Small Münsterländer is the smallest representative of its kind. According to the breed standard, males should reach a shoulder height of about 54 centimetres, while bitches should reach about 52 centimetres. A maximum deviation of two centimetres is permitted for Kleine Münsterländer of both sexes, both upwards and downwards.

The weight of the Small Münsterländer is not fixed and normally ranges between 17 and 25 kilograms. It varies according to size and sex, with females being more at the lower end of the range.

The physique of the Small Münsterländer appears harmonious. He has a well developed musculature as well as a firm skin. The rather flat head of the Small Munsterlander shows only a slight stop. His muzzle is strong, the lips are tight and the muzzle is straight. The large ears of the Little Munsterlander hang down and are densely coated.

The dense coat of the breed is medium long. The hairs are close lying. They can be either smooth or slightly wavy. The Small Münsterlander is bred in the colours grey or white with brown markings in different shapes and sizes.

Small Münsterländer character and temperament

On the basis of his character it quickly becomes clear that the Small Münsterländer was bred for hunting from the beginning. The medium-sized animals are characterized by a pronounced eagerness to work. They are intelligent and capable of learning and prove to have very strong nerves when used as hunting dogs.

Apart from this, the Small Münsterländer is considered to be well-balanced and of a stable nature. He is temperamental and open-minded, without being prone to excessive nervousness. Consistency and leadership should be emphasized in his training. However, excessive hardness should be avoided.

When dealing with children, the Small Münsterländer, who builds up a very close relationship with his owners, shows his friendly side. Even living together with other pets usually works without problems. However, the Small Münsterländer should be accustomed to them, if possible, already at puppy age.

Activities with the Small Münsterländer

Activities with the Small Münsterländer

Even though the Small Münsterländer is basically a loyal family dog, owners should not underestimate the breed's high drive for movement. After all, he is a hunting dog that wants to be physically and mentally occupied.

If the Small Münsterländer is not used for hunting ducks or other water birds, it is therefore very important to offer him appropriate alternatives.

If you have decided to purchase a Small Münsterländer as a family dog, we recommend that you opt for dog sports for the purpose of employment. This will give you the opportunity to use your active companion to full capacity and to meet his breed typical needs in an optimal way.

Among other things, the following dog sports are suitable for the Small Münsterländer:

In addition, you can inspire your quadruped with great probability also for the topic water work. Because Small Münsterlanders love water and usually encounter the cool wet without any shyness.

Against this background, a training as a rescue dog for water rescue is definitely a possibility. However, you should not have high expectations in his abilities as a watchdog with your Small Münsterländer. Because for this he is simply too friendly to strangers.

Small Münsterland diseases

The Small Münsterländer is a robust dog, which reaches an average age of 12 to 13 years. With regard to coat care, there is nothing special to consider. Occasional brushing is quite sufficient.

Unfortunately, despite its performance, the Small Münsterländer has a certain risk of some diseases. For example, his large, hairy ears are particularly susceptible to inflammation and various skin problems are not uncommon.

In rare cases, eye diseases and hip dysplasia also occur. Both can be largely excluded with a careful selection of animals for breeding.
