Airedale Terrier: Hundefutter und Rasseportrait

The Airedale Terrier originally comes from Great Britain. He is one of the oldest working dog breeds at all. The FCI leads the Airedale Terrier in group 3, section 1 (high running terriers).

The versatile breed is characterized by a friendly character and a high resilience.

Today the Airedale Terrier is no longer used only as a service dog, but is also appreciated as a loyal family and companion dog.

History of the Airedale Terrier

Among the ancestors of the Airedale Terrier are probably medium sized English Terriers, Otter Dogs, Scottish Shepherds and the Gordon Setter.

He originates from the valley of the river Aire in Yorkshire, where farmers living there began to breed around the middle of the 19th century.

His origin has also given the Airedale Terrier its present name, which is composed of the name of the river and the English word dale (valley). The aim at that time was to breed a versatile terrier.

In 1875 the first breeding results were presented at dog shows. At that time the Airedale Terrier was still called Bingley Terrier or Waterside Terrier. Its present name was established only from 1880 onwards.

The breed was recognized by the British Kennel Club in 1886 and only a few years later the first Airedale Terriers finally came to Germany, where it was soon used as a service dog breed.

During the two world wars the Airedale Terrier was used by the military as a reporting and medical dog. The King of Terriers, as the Airedale Terrier is occasionally called, is still used as a police dog today. Beyond that, however, he has long since developed into a popular family dog.

Features of the Airedale Terrier

The Airedale Terrier is a large dog with a slender and wiry build. According to the breed standard, males reach a shoulder height of about 58 to 61 centimetres and bitches reach about 56 to 59 centimetres.

Concerning the weight the breed standard for the Airedale Terrier does not provide any fixed specifications. Usually his body weight is in the range of 18 to 29 kilos, whereby bitches are normally much lighter than males.

The Airedale Terrier has a well-proportioned and compact physique. He has a well developed musculature, which already at first sight indicates an active and persistent dog.

The well proportioned head of the Airedale Terrier is flat and long. The stop is hardly noticeable and the flews fit well. The jaw of the Airedale Terrier is muscular and equipped with strong teeth.

The dark eyes are small. They should have an intelligent and bold expression and must not protrude. The V-shaped hinged ears of the Airedale Terrier are rather small. They are carried at the sides and should neither be set too high nor hang down.

The coat of the Airedale Terrier

The Airedale Terrier has a hard and wiry coat. Its coat is smooth and lies close to the body. It consists of quite short and soft undercoat and firm top coat. The hair may curl or be slightly wavy. A soft or curly coat is not desired in the Airedale Terrier.

The basic colour of the Airedale Terrier is Loh. He also has a black or grey saddle and markings in the corresponding colour on the top of the tail and on the neck. Some white hair between the front legs is acceptable according to the breed standard.

The Airedale Terrier is one of those breeds of dog that have very little hair. However, it is necessary to pay sufficient attention to coat care and to trim the coat several times a year.
