Grand poodle: dog food and breed portrait

Großpudel: Hundefutter und Rasseportrait

The large poodle is a medium sized dog breed that originated in France. There it was formerly used as a hunting dog for water hunting.

Today, the King Poodle, as the Grand Poodle is also called, is primarily kept as a companion and social dog. The FCI leads him in group 9, section 2 (poodle).

History of the Grand Poodle

At the French royal court the large poodle was probably already kept as a hunting dog in the 17th century. It is due to this circumstance that it is also called the king poodle (French: Caniche Royal).

Since the Grand Poodle was primarily used as a retriever dog for water hunting, its long, curly coat had to be regularly shorn. The hair on the upper body and head was usually left long. This so-called lion shearing is still known today. At dog shows it is to be seen meanwhile rather rarely.

Since the coat care of the king poodle is connected with a high expenditure, the breed was replaced by hunting dogs with a shorter coat. Nevertheless, the poodle continued to enjoy great popularity among nobles.

Today, the Grand Poodle is primarily kept as a companion and companion dog, which is valued by its owners for its intelligence and friendly character, among other things.

Characteristics of the Grand Poodle

The life expectancy of the large poodle is about 11 to 12 years. With a shoulder height of 45 to 60 centimetres, it belongs to the medium-sized dog breeds. With regard to weight, the breed standard for the large poodle does not set any requirements. Usually, however, this is a maximum of 30 kilograms for both bitches and males.

The body of the king poodle is slim and well-proportioned. It is slightly longer than high and its chest reaches to the elbows. His legs are well muscled and his gait is described in the breed standard as light-footed and prancing.

The rather narrow head of the large poodle fits harmoniously into the overall picture. He has a long and powerful muzzle with a complete scissor bite. His slightly slanted eyes look alert. They are almond-shaped and may be either dark brown or black. The long ears hang down along the cheeks.

The coat of the Grand Poodle

The luxuriant curly coat is without doubt one of the most characteristic external features of the large poodle. Unlike most other breeds of dog, the coat of the King Poodle hardly hairs at all and is not subject to the coat change that is common in dogs.

This is an advantage for allergy sufferers, but at the same time requires a lot of care. The large poodle does not only have to be shorn regularly. Its coat should also be brushed daily. This helps to prevent tangles and reduces the risk of skin parasites.

According to the breed standard, the coat of the Grand Poodle is a solid colour and may have the colours white, black, grey, brown, redfalse and apricot. Apart from this, however, bi-coloured specimens are also bred, which are very popular with lovers of the large poodle.

Poodles are bred in four different varieties, of which the king poodle is the largest. Its relatives are the small poodle, the dwarf poodle and the toypoodle. All four poodles differ only in size and are summarized by the FCI in a breed standard (No. 172).

Grand Poodle character and temperament

The large poodle is generally an extremely friendly dog that wants to please its owner. It is considered intelligent and capable of learning. The King Poodle builds up an extremely close relationship with its owner.

His upbringing is usually uncomplicated. On excessive severity and hardness should be renounced, however, thereby. At best, this leads to the King Poodle showing his stubborn side and consistently refusing to follow the instructions of his owner.

In addition, the hunting instinct that the large poodle still possesses today occasionally makes itself felt. With the right education, however, this can be brought under control quite well.
