Miniature Schnauzers

The Miniature Schnauzer is a small dog from Germany. He is the smallest representative of the three recognized Schnauzer types and is listed by the FCI in Group 2, Section 1 (Pinscher and Schnauzer).

The combination of his friendly temperament and his manageable size makes the Miniature Schnauzer a popular family dog, which also feels comfortable in a somewhat smaller home.

History of the Miniature Schnauzer

The Miniature Schnauzer originally comes from southern Germany, where Schnauzers were once kept as stable dogs. Their tasks there included hunting rats and other rodents. Initially the Miniature Schnauzer was not a separate breed, but was simply called the rough-haired Pinscher. This only changed around the turn of the century when the Miniature Schnauzer and the Monkey Pinscher were first exhibited as separate breeds.

With the entry in the second volume of the Pinscher Stud Book the name Miniature Schnauzer finally became official in 1910.

After the Miniature Schnauzer had been in the shadow of its two big brothers for a long time, it finally found more and more followers after the two world wars. Today the Miniature Schnauzer enjoys great popularity as a family dog.

Features of the Miniature Schnauzer

The miniature schnauzer reaches a shoulder height of 30 to 35 centimetres and a weight between four and eight kilos. An explicit distinction between bitches and males is not provided for in the breed standard.

The body type of the Miniature Schnauzer is similar to that of its larger brothers. His shoulder height corresponds approximately to the length of the torso. His general appearance appears strong and rather stocky than slim.

The strong skull of the Miniature Schnauzer is quite long and has a distinct stop. He has dark, oval eyes of medium size, which are directed forward and have a lively expression. His V-shaped hinged ears are set high.

The coat of the Miniature Schnauzer is hard and dense. It consists of a dense undercoat as well as a medium-length top coat, which lies close to the body. According to the breed standard of the Miniature Schnauzer the coat colours white, black, pepper salt and black silver are permitted.

An essential external characteristic of the Miniature Schnauzer is his strikingly long moustache and the bushy eyebrows. The Miniature Schnauzer loses only very few hairs. However, a regular coat care is very important. This includes trimming the coat about two to three times a year.

The big relatives of the miniature schnauzer

In total there are three different types of Schnauzers, which are all recognized as a separate breed. Besides the small Miniature Schnauzer there is also the medium sized Standard Schnauzer and the large Giant Schnauzer.

All three breeds differ from each other only in their body size, while they are almost completely identical with regard to the other external characteristics.

Miniature Schnauzer temperament and character

The Miniature Schnauzer is a small dog with a big character. He is extremely courageous and despite his compact body size he is even quite suitable as a watchdog.

Towards strangers the Miniature Schnauzer shows his suspicious side, while he builds up a very close relationship with his owners. Basically the Miniature Schnauzer has the desire to please his owners. However, he sometimes proves to be a bit stubborn and obstinate.

With the right upbringing and sufficient employment opportunities, the Miniature Schnauzer will develop into a loyal companion, who knows how to inspire his owners with his good-humoured nature.

When dealing with children, the Miniature Schnauzer usually proves to be a friendly and patient contemporary. As long as the needs of the four-legged friend are taken into account, keeping him as a family dog is usually no problem.

Activities with the Miniature Schnauzer

The Miniature Schnauzer is an active and agile dog. As he is normally kept as a pure family dog today, it is important to offer him sufficient employment opportunities.

If the Miniature Schnauzer is mentally and physically underchallenged, it can happen that he develops behavioural problems or deals with things that are not in the owner's interest.

Activities with the Miniature Schnauzer

Long walks are often not enough to satisfy the enterprising bundles of energy. Additional challenges in the form of dog sports are usually accepted joyfully by the Miniature Schnauzer.

Especially when kept in a small apartment, sporting activities are actually essential to ensure a balanced and satisfied dog.

Among others, the following dog sports are suitable for the Miniature Schnauzer:

Miniature Schnauzer diseases

Actually the Miniature Schnauzer is a quite robust dog. Nevertheless, there are some diseases for which he is at increased risk and therefore owners should know about them.

Especially the following diseases can occur with the Miniature Schnauzer:

In addition, the Miniature Schnauzer is prone to various eye diseases, such as progressive retinal atrophy, cataract and glaucoma, as well as to eye inflammation caused by insufficient production of tear fluid.

Furthermore, it is not uncommon for the Miniature Schnauzer to suffer from the so-called Schnauzer Comedo Syndrome. This is a hereditary inflammation of the hair follicles on the back. Apart from the fact that this does not look nice, the Schnauzer Comedo Syndrome is largely harmless.
