Bearded Collie: Hundefutter und Rasseportrait

The Bearded Collie is a medium sized dog from Great Britain. Like all Collies he was originally bred as a herding dog. The FCI therefore classes the Bearded Collie in group 1, section 1 (shepherds). Today, however, the Bearded Collie is primarily kept as a family dog and enjoys great popularity in Germany.

History of the Bearded Collie

The origins of the Bearded Collies lie in the Scottish Highlands. While its exact origin cannot be traced today, what is certain, is that the ancestors of Bearded Collies were already used as herding dogs by shepherds several hundred years ago.

Towards the end of the 19th century the Bearded Collie was first exhibited at dog shows. As a result, the breed quickly became known and popular. Even though it was initially still bred as a working dog, the Bearded Collie has now been kept as a pure companion dog for a good 100 years.

In Germany the Bearded Collie is also very popular. Despite declining numbers, more than 500 Bearded Collies are still born every year according to the puppy statistics of the VDH.

Features of the Bearded Collies

The average life expectancy of the Bearded Collies is 14 to 15 years. Male specimens reach a shoulder height of 53 to 56 centimetres and female Bearded Collies grow to about 51 to 53 centimetres.

With regard to body weight, the breed standard for the Bearded Collie does not specify any fixed values. In breeding, balanced proportions should be the primary consideration. The weight of the Bearded Collies usually ranges between 18 and 27 kilos.

The Bearded Collie has a strong build. At the same time it should not appear too heavy. He has a straight back with a strong loin and a deep chest.

His broad head is flat and square with a moderate stop. The Bearded Collie has a strong muzzle and strong jaws with a complete scissor bite. His large, gently looking eyes are matched to the colour of his coat and his medium sized ears hang down.

The coat of the Bearded Collie

The outer appearance of the Bearded Collies is determined to a large extent by its coat. Its coat consists of a soft, furry undercoat and hard, shaggy topcoat. It may be either smooth or slightly wavy. A curly coat is however undesirable in the Bearded Collie.

This also applies to too long hair. The length of the coat should offer the Bearded Collie sufficient protection without covering its natural build too much.

The breed standard allows the following colours with and without white markings:

  • Reddish Fallen Colours
  • Black
  • Slate Grey
  • Grey
  • Sand colours
  • Blue
  • Black
  • Brown
