Central Asian Ovcharka: dog food and breed portrait

Zentralasiatischer Owtscharka: Hundefutter und Rasseportrait

The Central Asian Ovcharka is a strong and large dog from Central Asia. The breed standard is maintained by Russia and the FCI lists him among the mountain dogs in group 2, section 2.2.

The Central Asian Ovcharka is characterized by a calm temperament and a courageous nature. In Germany, this impressive dog breed is not very common so far.

History of the Central Asian Ovcharkas

Given its name, it should come as no surprise that the Central Asian Ovcharka originally comes from Central Asia. There it is widespread in numerous countries, such as Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

In addition, the Central Asian Ovcharka can also be found in large parts of Siberia and in the Urals. Its ancestors were already used as guard dogs several hundred years ago.

Due to their fearless nature and their extraordinarily high resistance, these massive four-legged friends were ideally suited to protect the herds of nomadic tribes.

The large area of distribution has led to the development of different types of the Central Asian Ovcharkas over time. There are both somewhat slimmer and more agile animals as well as dogs with a particularly massive build.

Features of the Central Asian Ovcharkas

According to the breed standard, male animals should reach a shoulder height of at least 70 centimetres and a weight of 50 kilos. For female Central Asian Ovcharkas, the standard stipulates a minimum height of 65 centimetres and a weight of 40 kilos.

The Central Asian shepherd dog has a strong and muscular physique. He has a massive stature. His muscles are not visible, however. The Central Asian Ovcharka has a broad, straight back and a deep chest. His stomach is slightly raised.

The head is massive and fits harmoniously into the overall appearance. The stop is moderately pronounced. The jaws are strong and broad with large white teeth.

The eyes and the ears of the Central Asian Ovcharkas are medium sized. His eyes are oval and dark to hazel brown. His triangular ears are low set and drooping. If the law in the respective country permits it, it is usual to dock the ears.

The coat of the Central Asian Ovcharkas

According to the breed standard the coat may be either short or long. For shorthaired animals the desired coat length is given as three to five centimetres.

For long-haired Ovcharkas the breed standard is seven to ten centimetres. The coat of the latter also forms a mane and feathering on the ears, the back of the legs and the tail.

Almost all colours are permitted. Only a black coat on tan as well as genetically brown and genetically blue in all combinations are undesirable.

Central Asian Ovcharka character and temperament

Central Asian Ovcharka character and temperament

The Central Asian Ovcharka has a calm temperament. He is self-confident and independent by nature. In the event of a possible threat, he initially reacts calmly and prudently. However, if the situation requires it in his opinion, he then attacks fearlessly and without warning.

The Central Asian Ovcharka is a dominant dog that requires consistent training by an experienced owner. Because for a problem-free coexistence it is important that he recognizes his owner as a leader.

If this is the case, the Central Asian Ovcharka proves to be very human-oriented and friendly. Towards strangers, however, he usually remains suspicious and distant.

Apart from that, prospective owners should be aware that the dominant Central Asian Ovcharka usually does not get along with other dogs. Accordingly, a participation in dog sports with these work-hungry animals is often not possible without further ado.

Activities with the Central Asian Ovcharka

The Central Asian Ovcharka is a classic herd protection dog. In his homeland he still enjoys great popularity as a working dog. There he accompanies, among other things, herdsmen on their hikes through the extensive steppe landscapes.

In Germany, however, the Central Asian Ovcharka is still quite unknown. One of the reasons for this is probably that these impressive animals are only suitable as family dogs to a limited extent.

A life in the big city is out of the question for the Central Asian Ovcharka. A house with a large property in a somewhat more remote area corresponds there already rather to the needs of the large Shepherd dog from Central Asia.

There he proves to be an excellent watchdog with the appropriate training and sufficient workload, who reliably protects his two-legged herd and lives together harmoniously with his family.

Central Asian Ovcharka diseases

The Central Asian Ovcharka is a robust dog, which, unlike many other purebred dogs, has largely been spared from an increased susceptibility to certain diseases.

Due to its weight, however, there is a certain risk of joint diseases. In addition to possible symptoms of hip or elbow dysplasia, owners should therefore pay particular attention to the knees of their Central Asian Ovcharka.

In addition, as with virtually all large dogs, there is some risk of life-threatening gastric torsion. Nevertheless, the average life expectancy of the Central Asian Ovcharka is 12 to 15 years, which is very high for a breed of its size.

The correct diet of the Central Asian Ovcharkas

The Central Asian Ovcharka is a frugal dog that does not make great demands on its food. In order to support the health of your four-legged friend optimally, it is nevertheless important to pay attention to a good quality when buying food.

With our cold pressed dry food you make exactly the right decision for your Central Asian Ovcharka. The digestible feed is free of grain and artificial additives.

In addition, the croquettes produced in the cold pressing process swell only slightly in the stomach, so that the risk of stomach twisting can be kept to a minimum.
