Avoid food mites and food mite allergies in dogs

Food mites and food mite allergies in dogs

There are various types of mites that make life difficult for dogs and can cause itching and skin inflammation, for example. These include food mites, which under certain circumstances can settle in dog food.

In the following we will explain how you can best avoid food mites and thus a possible food mite allergy in your dog.

What are food mites?

Like all mites, food mites are tiny arachnids. They are similar to house dust mites and are sometimes also called storage mites. Due to their small body size, they can only be seen with the naked eye when they have already reproduced strongly.

Feed mites are very common in the environment. They are also found in house dust and even on furniture.

Basically, however, feed mites prefer an environment in which they find many nutrients. This is the case, for example, with flour or even dry dog food. Fodder mites feel particularly comfortable in warm temperatures of about 25 to 30 degrees Celsius and a humidity of at least 70 degrees. However, they are extremely resistant, so they can survive outside these ideal conditions without any problems.

How food mites get into the dog's food

Theoretically, the feed mites can get into the dog's food via contaminated raw materials already during production. However, any feed mites that may be present are completely killed off due to the temperature increase during production.

Accordingly, contamination with feed mites can only occur after production. For example, if the production plant is not properly cleaned and the finished feed is stored open for too long, the tiny pests can get into the final product and multiply unnoticed.

In most cases, however, the feed mites do not get into the feed until it is stored in the dog owner's home.

If a bag of dry food remains open, for example, it is only a matter of time before feed mites colonize the dog food and multiply there at an ever faster rate.

Detecting food mites in dog food

A small number of feed mites are usually not easily detected. However, if the pests have already multiplied, the dog's food usually takes on a clearly noticeable minty smell.

In addition, typical brown mite dust collects on the bottom of the package and on the croquettes themselves. If this is already the case, we recommend that you dispose of the dog food contaminated with food mites.

Causes and symptoms of food mite allergy in dogs

Feed mites can cause allergic reactions in dogs. Not only the mites themselves are responsible for such feed mite allergies, but also certain protein compounds in their excrements.

If a dog suffers from a feed mite allergy, this is primarily associated with severe itching. As a result, affected animals scratch themselves very intensively, which further intensifies the symptoms.

It is not uncommon for the further course of the feed mite allergy to lead to inflammation and injury to the skin. The veterinarian can diagnose the feed mite allergy by means of a blood test or a skin test.

A food mite allergy can cause very unpleasant symptoms for your dog. You should therefore do your utmost to avoid mite infestation in your home from the very beginning.

How to protect your dog from food mites

You can protect your dog's food from food mites by taking the following measures:

  • Always seal the opened package airtight.
  • Do not store dog food near human food.
  • If you transfer the dry food into reusable packaging, you must clean it regularly.
  • Also rinse measuring cups or spoons that you use for dosing regularly.
  • Store your dog's food in a cool and dry place.
  • Buy dog food in reasonable quantities to avoid long storage periods.
  • Dispose of food that is past its sell-by date.

Feed mites in dog food - our conclusion

Feed mites are more widespread than most people are aware of. Many dogs even suffer from food mite allergies and the associated complaints. For this reason, it is important that you protect your dog from food mites and prevent uncontrolled reproduction of these annoying pests. The best way to do this is to store your dog in the right conditions and to maintain a high level of hygiene.

Furthermore, we recommend that you give preference to a dog food that has been produced according to high quality standards. You will find particularly high-quality products where this is the case, for example, in our range.
