Can brewer's yeast cause an infection with yeast fungus?

Kann Bierhefe eine Infektion mit Hefepilz auslösen?

It is well known that brewer's yeast is very rich in valuable nutrients and is therefore often used as a food supplement for humans or also dogs. At the same time, one reads again and again that brewer's yeast can cause ear infections in dogs due to a yeast infection in the ears.

Whether this really corresponds to the facts or is merely a misunderstanding, you will find out in the following.

What is brewer's yeast?

To brew beer, yeast is required. The tiny yeast fungi, which have the Latin name Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, take care of the fermentation process in which sugar is converted into alcohol. Brewer's yeast, which is used as a dietary supplement, is a by-product of beer production. This is because it is brewer's yeast that is filtered out of the beer after the brewing process and then processed further.

What makes brewer's yeast so valuable for your dog

As you may know, some Bellfor supplements also contain brewer's yeast. Of course, there is a good reason for this. Because brewer's yeast is very rich in valuable nutrients such as B vitamins, minerals, enzymes and amino acids.

Among other things, it is characterised by its high content of folic acid, zinc and biotin, which means it can positively influence the condition of your dog's skin and coat. The food supplements where we rely on the positive properties of brewer's yeast, therefore, include, for example, Bellfor Skin & Coat and Shiimun Skin.

By the way, we only use real brewer's yeast. This always comes from breweries that brew their beer according to the German Purity Law. This way we can guarantee that our brewer's yeast is particularly rich in valuable ingredients and that your four-legged friend can benefit optimally from his food supplement.

How do yeast infections occur in dogs?

It is of course undisputed that dogs can suffer from yeast infections. In this case, the yeast fungus Malassezia pachydermatis is responsible. This naturally occurs in small amounts in the ears and on the skin of the dog.

In animals with a normally functioning immune system, this is not a problem and the yeast fungi can neither multiply excessively nor cause discomfort. However, if your four-legged friend's defences are weakened, it can happen that the yeast fungi spread all at once and cause inflammation of the ears, for example.

As you would realise from the Latin names for brewer's yeast and yeast fungi, the yeast fungi responsible for the fungal infection are something completely different from the brewer's yeast used as a food supplement.

Accordingly, brewer's yeast is not responsible if your dog suffers from a yeast infection. Instead, you should consider other possible health problems as the cause. These include, for example, an untreated parasite infestation or allergies.

Intolerance reactions to brewer's yeast are very rare

In individual cases, dogs can react sensitively to the consumption of brewer's yeast, which can sometimes make itself felt through itchy ears. In this case, food intolerances are responsible. However, these are very rare and even then have nothing to do with a fungal infection.

Brewer's yeast for dogs - our conclusion

As you can see, the fear that dogs can get a yeast infection from supplements with brewer's yeast is unfounded. The four-legged friends can in fact benefit from the numerous valuable nutrients of brewer's yeast, so that from a health point of view there is usually nothing to be said against the administration of corresponding products.
