Neck ruffs for dogs: you need to know that

Halskrausen für Hunde

There is probably no dog that doesn't need a pet cone at some point in its life. It serves as a protective device with which you can prevent your four-legged friend from licking and damaging wounds further.

Of course, your dog will be anything but enthusiastic when you put a pet cone on it. Below we will explain why there is sometimes no other way and what types of pet cones there are available for dogs.

What is a pet cone?

A pet cone, also referred to as Elizabethan collar or cone of shame, is a large protective collar that is placed around the dog's neck. Usually it has the shape of a cone, which widens towards the head of the four-legged friend.

The thought-through shape ensures that it is practically impossible for the dog to lick or bite itself.

When your dog needs a pet cone

There are many situations in which dogs may need to wear a pet cone. This includes, for example, a fresh wound after surgery, or an injury that your dog sustained during a fight  with another dog.

A pet cone can also be indispensable in the case of eye injuries or hotspots that your dog may have due to a fungal skin infection, as well as abrasions and itching caused by allergies.

This is because as soon as it starts to itch, hardly any dog can be prevented from trying to relieve the itching with licking and biting. This can quickly have fatal consequences, especially when it comes to surgical sutures.

Even if you feel sorry for your dog when you put the cone on it, there is sometimes no way around using such protection.

An overview of the different types of pet cones

There are several different types of pet cones that you can choose from. When buying, you must of course first and foremost make sure that the protective collar of your choice fulfils its task as licking protection optimally. Apart from that, it should fit your dog well and not be too uncomfortable.

The following protective collars for dogs are available:

  • Cone-shaped collars are usually made of plastic and are a very effective
  • protection against licking.
  • In addition to the classic hard plastic cones, there are also models in the
  • form of a large protective collar, which, however, due to its mostly flexible
  • material, does not always guarantee reliable protection.
  • Inflatable dog collars in the appropriate size can also be an alternative, but
  • they also do not protect all areas of the body.
  • Tubular dog collars are stiff tubes that significantly limit the mobility of the
  • dog's neck without affecting the eyes and ears.

Cone-shaped collars are usually the most uncomfortable or annoying for your dog. At the same time, however, they usually offer the most effective licking protection and can't be avoided in some situations. Such pet cones have increasingly been made available of somewhat more comfortable materials, which can improve the wearing comfort at least a little bit.

Why dogs are so reluctant to wear pet cones

If you put a protective collar on your dog, your four-legged friend will usually be anything but enthusiastic about it. This is not only because wearing it is uncomfortable, but also because of a number of physical limitations that are associated with it.

A cone restricts the view of your four-legged friend and also amplifies noises, and at the same time your dog can no longer locate the sounds correctly.

Experience has shown that it is not uncommon for dogs with a collar to be quite insecure on the move and often bump into furniture or even door frames. Obviously all of this is extremely unpleasant for your four-legged friend, so it shouldn't come as a surprise if it feels a bit resentful about putting the protective collar on.

How to get your dog used to wearing the protective collar

As the owner, you know why you put a pet cone on your dog and that this is only for the benefit of the four-legged friend. However, your dog does not know this and may react downright horrified when you put a cone on it for the first time.

The fact that the four-legged friend is already stressed because of the itching doesn't make things any better. You will therefore need some patience to achieve at least some level of acceptance.

Extensive praise and pats can help, as can the use of particularly tasty dog treats, because when your four-legged friend learns that it is rewarded with a great treat every time, the aversion to the annoying collar can usually brought at least partly under control.

Pet cones are not a permanent solution

Even though the use of a cone is sometimes unavoidable, it is not a permanent solution.

Allergic or disease-related itching cannot be remedied just with licking protection. Instead, you have to provide adequate treatment for the causes so that you can free your dog from its unloved protective collar as soon as possible.

This also applies if the excessive scratching and biting is due to a behavioural disorder. In this case, an experienced dog trainer may be able to help.

Can you train dogs with a pet cone?

On the internet you can sometimes read that a cone is not only useful in the case of injuries or skin conditions, but can also help to wean the dog off undesirable behaviour.

However, a pet cone is not intended for this and, in our opinion, such a procedure has no place in dog training. In view of the considerable restrictions that wearing the cone entails for your four-legged friend, you should therefore only use the licking protection when your dog's health requires it.

Our conclusion on the subject of pet cones

As you can see, a protective collar is often indispensable for dogs that have recently had surgery or are suffering from severe itching, in order to protect the four-legged friends from self-inflicted injuries.

Since such a protective collar is quite uncomfortable and annoying for your dog, you will probably need a lot of patience when putting it on. The occasional dog treat as a motivational aid should not be missing. With dog snacks from Bellfor, you are choosing particularly high-quality delicacies made from natural ingredients for this purpose.
