Castration in male dogs: everything important at a glance

As the owner of a male dog, you will sooner or later have to decide whether you should have your dog neutered. In the following, we will explain how the procedure works, what costs you should expect and when neutering a male dog makes sense. You will also learn about the advantages and disadvantages and whether a castration chip is a sensible alternative for your male dog.

Castration in male dogs: When does the procedure make sense?

In general, neutering a male dog always makes sense if the four-legged friend is not to reproduce. Since most dog owners do not intend to use their dogs for breeding anyway, this is quite often the case in practice.

In this context, also bear in mind that sexually mature male dogs can sometimes become quite exhausting as soon as they get close to a female companion. This is especially true if the female dog is in heat.

Neutering significantly reduces your male dog's interest in the opposite sex and also contributes to your dog becoming calmer overall and no longer marking his perceived territory at every opportunity.

Health benefits of castration in male dogs

Besides positive effects on behaviour, neutering your male dog also has health benefits. The procedure reduces the likelihood of prostate disease and also prevents testicular cancer.

At what age should castration be performed on male dogs?

Theoretically, castration of male dogs is possible at any age. The procedure is routine for vets and the risks are accordingly low. However, the older your four-legged friend is, the greater the stress associated with the operation and the more likely complications are to occur.

At the same time, neutering male dogs too early can restrict their mental and physical development and promote a tendency towards aggression. Unless medical reasons require early castration, it is, therefore, advisable to have the procedure done only after the dog is one year old.

Castration procedure for male dogs

During castration, the male dog's testicles are removed. Since these are not inside the body, the procedure is relatively uncomplicated and usually done in about 30 minutes.

First, the vet will put your four-legged friend under anaesthesia, remove some hair and disinfect the area where the procedure will be performed. Through an incision in the scrotum, the veterinarian will access the testicles, which they remove after clamping the spermatic ducts.

After the incision has been sutured, the operation is over. About 10 days after the castration, you can have the stitches removed from your male dog at the vet. To prevent licking of the surgical wound, it may be advisable to put a cone on the dog during healing.

Castration in male dogs: What are the costs?

The fees that the veterinarian is allowed to charge you are regulated in the scale of fees for veterinarians. This also applies to the costs you have to expect for the castration of your male dog.

However, depending on the amount of work involved, the veterinarian is free to choose between different fee rates when billing, so that the actual invoice amount may well vary.

As a rule, however, the cost of neutering a male dog is between 150 and 200 euros. Compared to female dogs, where the procedure of spaying is naturally a bit more expensive, neutering is much cheaper.

Obesity in neutered male dogs

Castration is not associated with any significant risks for your male dog. However, you should keep in mind that your four-legged friend will be much more susceptible to obesity after the procedure.

This is due to both changes in the hormone balance and also to the fact that your four-legged friend generally has less urge to move compared to uncastrated dogs.

To avoid obesity and the possible consequences for the health of the animal that come with it, it is therefore particularly important that you pay attention to feeding an appropriate amount of food after neutering your male dog.

If your dog has already put on weight, a prompt diet is recommended. In addition to a moderate reduction in the amount of food, you can support this with a dietary supplement of Shiimun Slim if necessary. Shiimun Slim is our natural diet powder for dogs.

The easily digestible preparation made from high-quality ingredients such as shiitake and psyllium husks can help to reduce the weight of your neutered male dog in the long term.

Castration in male dogs with a hormone chip

If you want to spare your dog the surgical procedure, you have the option of having a hormone chip inserted instead, which contains the active ingredient deslorelin. In this case, it is also called chemical castration.

The chip leads to temporary infertility, which normally lasts between six months and a whole year. The male dog's behaviour resembles that after a proper castration due to the reduced production of testosterone.

However, testicular cancer cannot be prevented with the help of a hormone chip. Please also bear in mind that, especially in very small dog breeds, it can happen in individual cases that the male dog remains permanently infertile.

Castration in male dogs - our conclusion

As you can see, neutering not only prevents your male dog from reproducing unintentionally. It can also have a positive effect on the behaviour and health of your four-legged friend. As long as you feed your male dog according to his needs after neutering, you can avoid obesity and thus the only significant disadvantage of the whole thing.

Considering the almost non-existent risks and the simultaneous benefits associated with neutering, it is therefore definitely advisable to at least consider the procedure for your male dog.
