Are dogs allowed to eat pears?

Feeding according to needs is known to contribute decisively to the health and well-being of dogs. With food that is not intended as dog food from the outset, it, therefore, makes sense in principle to be a little cautious. After all, some foods that are completely harmless for us humans can lead to unpleasant digestive problems or even poisoning in dogs.

Whether dogs are allowed to eat pears or whether the popular fruit is also considered unsuitable food for four-legged friends is explained below.

Fruit as a healthy snack for your dog?

Fruit is known to be rich in vitamins and is undoubtedly a healthy snack. At least for us humans, fruit is simply part of a balanced diet.

In principle, this also applies to dogs, but their nutritional needs are quite different from ours. Therefore, you should not simply give your dog the same food that you put on your plate. This also applies to supposedly healthy things, such as fruit.

Not all fruits are suitable for dogs. Grapes are even poisonous for the animals and eating them can be fatal in the worst case. If you want to feed your dog a piece of pear from time to time, however, you don't have to worry in this respect.

Pears as a tasty snack for dogs

Pears originate from Asia. Like apples, they belong to the pome fruit family. Thanks to their low fruit acidity and high fructose content, they usually taste somewhat sweeter than apples.

Pears contain various vitamins. Besides vitamin C, these include vitamin A and some B vitamins. They also contain calcium and potassium and are quite rich in fibre. The energy content of pears is just under 60 calories per 100 grams. They are also considered easy on the stomach, which can be an advantage especially for dogs with stomach problems.

If you want to give your dog pears, you should give preference to overripe fruits. You can easily recognise these by the fact that they can be pressed in with your finger.

Do not give the dog too many pears

Even if dogs are generally allowed to eat pears, the consumption of the fruit should nevertheless be kept within limits. What this means in each individual case depends, of course, largely on the size of your four-legged friend. But even very large animals should not eat several pears every day.

If there is a pear tree in your garden and your dog has acquired a taste for the sweet fruit, it is, therefore, advisable to pick up fallen pears promptly during harvest time so that your four-legged friend cannot eat them uncontrollably.

Just as with many other fruits and vegetables, too much pear can cause your dog digestive problems such as diarrhoea or flatulence. By limiting yourself to giving your dog a piece of pear as a small snack only from time to time, you can avoid this.

Are dogs allowed to eat pickled pears?

The fact that dogs are allowed to eat fresh pears cannot simply be transferred to the pickled variety available in jars and tins in the supermarket.

As a rule, pickled pears contain a lot of extra sugar. This is not healthy for your four-legged friend and has no place in a balanced dog diet.

Our conclusion on the subject of pears as a snack for dogs

The question of whether dogs can eat pears can be answered in principle with yes. However, you should give your four-legged friend overripe fruits if possible, as they are easier for him to digest.

Of course, you should not overdo it in terms of quantity. But an occasional piece of pear is no problem for your dog and most four-legged friends like its great taste very much.

Regardless of this, you should of course be aware that fruit such as pears cannot supply dogs with nutrients in line with their needs. To ensure a species-appropriate diet, your four-legged friend's diet must of course consist mainly of high-quality dog food. In our shop, you will find everything you need for this purpose, from grain-free dry and wet food to healthy dog snacks.
