Dog scratches constantly: Causes and tips

Dog scratches constantly

If your dog is constantly scratching, it is not something you as an owner should ignore. The possible causes for the annoying itching are numerous and the necessary countermeasures can accordingly be quite different.

In the following article, we explain why your dog is constantly scratching and what you can do about it.

Why constant scratching in dogs is a problem

If a dog is constantly scratching, this usually means that the quadruped is suffering from severe itching. This is naturally extremely unpleasant for the animal and should therefore be eliminated as soon as possible.

In addition, however, the dog's skin will sooner or later be affected by the constant scratching. If you do not counteract the itching, it is usually only a matter of time before bald patches appear in the coat and open wounds develop. The latter facilitates the penetration of pathogens and can therefore become a serious health risk for the animal.

Common causes of constant scratching in dogs

To stop your dog from scratching all the time, you must of course first identify the cause of the itching and then treat it with the appropriate measures.

Common triggers for itching and associated scratching in dogs include:

  • Mites
  • Fleas
  • Skin fungus
  • Allergies
  • Stress

Dogs with mites scratch themselves constantly

Mites are extremely annoying ectoparasites that can also infest the skin of dogs. The typical symptoms of a mite infestation include, among other complaints, severe itching.

Therefore, if your dog is constantly scratching, mites may be responsible. If the itching is limited to his head, it is probably ear mites. Apart from that, dogs can also be infested with grass mites and mange mites, for example.

Counteract mites naturally with Bellfor

In our range you will find various products with which you can counteract a mite infestation in your dog. For dogs with ear mites, for example, we have Bellfor Anti-ear mite drops in our range.

Both products contain only natural ingredients so that you can rely on good skin compatibility and do not unnecessarily stress your dog's organism by using them.

Dogs with fleas scratch themselves constantly

Fleas are another possible trigger you should consider if your dog is constantly scratching. Fleas are widespread in dogs and their treatment often takes a long time. This is not least since only a small part of the skin parasites live on the body of the four-legged friend, while the rest sometimes contaminate the entire household and can thus lead to a recurring infestation.

The already unpleasant itching becomes particularly severe if the dog suffers from a so-called flea saliva allergy. But even if this is not the case, you should of course remove the flea infestation from your four-legged friend immediately.

Dogs with skin fungus scratch themselves constantly

Similar to an infestation with parasites, an infection with skin fungus can also be responsible for dogs constantly scratching themselves. In addition to severe itching, the fungal infection also causes skin inflammation and hair loss, which typically leads to circular bald patches in the four-legged friend's coat.

Skin fungus is not only unpleasant for dogs. It is also very contagious. Treatment, which usually involves the use of antimycotics, should therefore be started as soon as possible.

Therapy-accompanying care with Bellfor

If your dog suffers from skin fungus, we recommend supporting the vet's treatment with Bellfor Myko-Health. In addition to natural surfactants and selected oils, the high-quality dog shampoo also contains 0.3 percent Climbazole, which is known for its antifungal and fungistatic effect. This makes Myko-Health Shampoo by Bellfor ideal for therapy-accompanying care for dogs with skin fungus.

Dogs with allergies scratch all the time

In addition to parasites and skin fungus, allergies are also responsible in many cases when a dog scratches itself constantly. Common allergies in dogs include the aforementioned flea saliva allergy, atopic dermatitis and food allergies.

An allergy is an overreaction of the immune system that is triggered by contact with substances from the environment that are harmless. In dogs with food allergies, for example, allergic reactions are usually caused by certain animal proteins in the food.

Hypoallergenic dog food from Bellfor

Food allergies have become an increasingly common problem in dogs in recent years. If your dog is affected, we recommend that you make a consistent switch to our hypoallergenic insect-based dog food.

The insect protein it contains is made from the larvae of black soldier flies (Hermetia illucens) and is characterised by its excellent digestibility and high biological value.

You will find both dry and wet food as well as insect-based snacks. A complete changeover is, therefore, no problem. Of course, you can be sure that your allergic four-legged friend will be supplied with all the important nutrients he needs.

Think about your dog's kidneys too

If your dog is constantly scratching its ears, this may not only be a symptom of an infestation with ear mites but may also indicate an ear infection.

This can also be caused by problems with the kidneys, among other things. The kidneys are a vital filter organ that frees your four-legged friend's body from harmful substances.

If the ear infection in your dog cannot be traced back to another cause, you should therefore consider this possibility in any case and of course, also do something about it.

Natural support for the kidneys

A permanent overload of the kidneys can lead to chronic kidney insufficiency in your dog over time. To avoid this, it makes sense to support your four-legged friend's kidneys regularly.

For this purpose, we recommend a food supplement with Bellfor Kidney Power. The preparation consists of selected herbs that can help stimulate the natural detoxification processes in the kidneys and thus counteract overload.

Maybe your dog is scratching due to stress

If a dog is constantly scratching, it does not always have to be a sign of itching triggered by a health problem. In some cases, it may simply be a stress-induced act of hyperactivity.

This suspicion is particularly obvious if your dog only scratches more in very specific situations, such as in a group with several conspecifics.

Dog is constantly scratching - our conclusion

As you can see, there are many possible causes for your dog's constant scratching. For many of the causes, you will find suitable solutions in the Bellfor range with which you can counteract your four-legged friend's complaints or at least sensibly accompany veterinary treatment.
