Puppy training: tips for new dog owners

When a puppy moves in with you, it is without a doubt a big change in your life. After all, the little dog needs a lot of attention and activity, especially in the early days after moving in.

In addition, it is of course important that you start training your puppy as early as possible. In the following article, you will learn what you need to pay attention to when raising a puppy and which things the four-legged friend should learn first.

Puppy training: There is much to learn

Usually, puppies are about three months old when they are handed over from the breeder to their new owner. Considering their age, it should therefore come as no surprise that the little four-legged friends still have a lot to learn.

Even if your puppy is still cute, you should start training him as early as possible. Otherwise, everyday life with a dog will soon be much more strenuous than it needs to be.

When training the puppy, focus on the following things first:

  • Name of the dog
  • Leash handling
  • House-trained
  • Basic commands
  • Stay alone

Raising a puppy: Does your dog know his name?

Before you can move on to other areas of puppy training, it is first necessary that your dog knows his name and understands that he is meant when you call him.

Make sure you are not disturbed and that the puppy's last meal was a while ago. Address him specifically by name. If he responds to this, the four-legged friend has earned a reward in the form of extensive praise and petting or even a small dog snack.

Practice regularly and don't scold your puppy if he doesn't always listen to his name at first. With a little patience, it won't take long until your four-legged friend has internalised his name.

Puppy training: Leash walking

The topic of leash walking is something that should be high on every dog owner's list for puppy training. After all, in many everyday situations, it is essential that your four-legged friend is used to his leash and that you can move around safely with him.

It may well be that the breeder has already done some preliminary work in this respect or that your puppy is relaxed with the leash of its own accord. However, this is not always the case. It is therefore also possible that you will need some patience until your little dog walks next to you on the leash as desired.

The first step is to get your puppy used to wearing a harness or collar. If this works well, the next step is to familiarise him with his leash. For this to succeed, you mustn’t acknowledge the four-legged friend when he bites the leash or simply stands still.

Puppy training: housetraining

Dogs are actually very clean animals. It is therefore far from their nature to soil their own home. However, this does not mean that your puppy is house-trained from day one and understands that he is not allowed to do his business in the home.

It is therefore an important part of puppy training to teach your little four-legged friend exactly that. With young animals, you can expect them to need to relieve themselves every two or three hours or so. To get your puppy house-trained, you should therefore definitely make sure that you take it outside often enough.

If you have the feeling that your four-legged friend is getting restless, it is high time for the next trip outdoors. Ideally, you should find a fixed place from the beginning where your dog is always allowed to do his business. If he was successful, he has of course earned extensive praise from you.

Puppy training: basic commands

Of course, you will not be able to teach your puppy demanding tricks straight away. For a normal family dog, this is not necessary. Nevertheless, it is part of puppy training that your four-legged friend masters some basic commands. After all, you must be able to control him at all times in everyday life.

The commands that your puppy should learn in any case include things like place, sit, come, stay and off. Through regular training, you can ensure that your dog will soon master these commands reliably.

You can also use situations that arise by chance. For example, if your puppy sits down of its own accord, say "Sit" and confirm it with your extensive praise. Apart from that, small dog treats are of course also an excellent tool that you can use here when training your puppy.

Puppy training: small dog alone at home

As you may know, dogs are pack animals. It is therefore not in your puppy's nature to spend much time alone. At the same time, however, it is usually unavoidable to have to leave your little four-legged friend alone in the flat sooner or later.

Of course, you can't leave your young dog alone for hours at a time, but must first get him used to it. In the beginning, just leave the room. When your four-legged friend no longer chases after you every time, the time is right to leave the flat alone for the first time.

Start with a few minutes at first and stay out a little longer each day. Over time, your puppy will learn that it is perfectly normal for you to leave the house and for you to come home.

As you can see, you can expect some work when training your puppy. But if you start training early and stay consistent, you can be sure that your little four-legged friend will learn quickly and that nothing will stand in the way of a relaxed everyday life.
