Apples are known to be healthy and have long been one of the most popular fruits in Germany. But what about dogs? Are dogs allowed to eat apples, or is it better not to feed them this vitamin-rich snack?
After all, most dog owners are probably aware that some foods that are entirely harmless to us humans can be highly toxic to dogs.
Find out below whether this also applies to apples or whether your dog can safely enjoy them.
It is well-known that fruit is part of a balanced diet for us humans and should therefore be on the menu every day if possible.
However, dogs have different nutritional needs. If you were to feed your four-legged friend the same food that you eat, problems such as food intolerances and deficiency symptoms would not be long in arising.
Some foods are even poisonous for your dog. By the way, this also applies to healthy foods too, such as some fruits and vegetables.
Fortunately, if you let your dog eat a piece of apple occasionally, however, you do not have to worry that this could cause a nutrient deficiency or even poisoning in the four-legged friend.
Apples contain many valuable nutrients from which dogs can benefit. These include vitamins A and E, as well as various B vitamins and smaller amounts of minerals such as magnesium or potassium.
Apart from that, apples are rich in fibre, which is important for healthy digestion. Even if the fruit is, of course, not suitable as a main meal, your four-legged friend can enjoy a piece of apple or two. Alternatively, you can let your dog eat some grated apple.
Many of the valuable nutrients in apples are found in their skin, which your dog can eat without hesitation. However, wash the apple thoroughly before allowing them to eat it to remove any pesticide residues and other impurities.
What applies to apples also applies in principle to applesauce. However, bear in mind that most finished products contain, among other things, a not to be underestimated amount of sugar in addition to apples.
If you want to let your dog eat applesauce, you should therefore take the trouble to prepare it yourself, naturally avoiding added sugar and other unsuitable ingredients.
To avoid digestive problems with your dog, you should only let your four-legged friend eat ripe apples. Of course, this is not a problem with store-bought fruit.
However, if you have an apple tree in your garden or if you pass orchards while walking, you should be careful, depending on the season, that your dog does not eat unripe apples.
Apple cores contain the cyanogenic glycoside amygdalin, which is converted into toxic prussic acid in the body. In contrast to the cores of some other fruits, the amygdalin content in apple cores is very low.
To be on the safe side, you should still only let your dog eat apples without seeds. After all, the vitamin-rich snack should not only taste good for your four-legged friend but also do him good.
Experience shows that intolerance reactions triggered by apples are rare in dogs. Nevertheless, it can occasionally happen that a four-legged friend does not tolerate the fruit and eating it causes itching and reddening of the skin.
If this is the case with your dog, you should, of course, not let them eat any more apples and instead give them a treat of fruit that they tolerate better or, for example, one of the healthy dog treats from Bellfor.
As you can see, there is generally nothing wrong with letting your dog eat apples. As long as your four-legged friend likes the fruit, it is a healthy and low-calorie snack that is usually well tolerated.
