Are dogs allowed to eat strawberries?

Are dogs allowed to eat strawberries

Strawberries are high on many people's list of favourite fruits and regularly appear on their plates during the season. However, it’s not only humans who like strawberries. In addition, many a dog cannot resist the sweet taste of the fruit.

Perhaps this also applies to your four-legged friend, and you are wondering whether dogs are allowed to eat strawberries or whether the fruit is instead harmful to them. We will give you the answer to this question in the following article.

Strawberries for dogs: healthy or dangerous?

Fruit such as strawberries is a natural part of a balanced diet for us humans. Dogs, however, have different needs in this respect. As semi-carnivores, their diet must contain sufficient animal fats and proteins, which we have, of course, also taken into account in the composition of our tasty dog treats.

In addition, many foods that we tolerate without any problems are unsuitable or even toxic for our four-legged friends. This is true not only for things like chocolate but also for healthy foods, such as some types of fruit or vegetables.

However, strawberries are not one of them. If you let your dog eat strawberries, you do not usually have to worry about harming them.

Strawberries contain many valuable nutrients for dogs

Strawberries are considered healthy. They are low-calorie fruits and have comparatively low sugar content. At the same time, they contain various essential vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C, folic acid, magnesium and calcium.

In addition, strawberries are rich in secondary plant compounds, which, among other things, act as antioxidants in the body to help protect the cells from damage caused by free radicals.

Wash strawberries for dogs thoroughly before eating them

Before you let your dog eat strawberries, be sure to wash the fruit thoroughly. This is especially true for fruit that does not come from organic farming or your garden and may therefore be contaminated with pesticides. Of course, it is also advisable to wash untreated strawberries before letting your dog eat them.

Let your dog eat strawberries only in moderation

Although strawberries are generally healthy for dogs, you should not let your four-legged friend eat too much of this fruit at once. Otherwise, eating the fruit may well cause your dog diarrhoea and stomach pains.

However, one or two strawberries for small dogs or a handful of fruit for large dogs are generally perfectly fine, and many four-legged friends are happy to accept them as a welcome change in their diet.

Do all dogs tolerate strawberries?

Usually, dogs tolerate strawberries very well in moderation. However, it is still possible that the consumption of strawberries can lead to intolerances or allergic reactions.

If you notice such symptoms in your dog, you should, of course, not let them eat any more strawberries and limit them in future to the types of fruit that they tolerate.

Are dogs allowed to eat frozen strawberries?

As we all know, strawberries are not available all year round. In autumn and winter, you have no choice but to use strawberries from the freezer. But, as long as they are unsweetened, they can also be eaten by dogs.

At least in summer, you don't even have to defrost the strawberries for your dog, but you can also offer them frozen as a refreshing snack.

Strawberries for dogs - our conclusion

As you can see, dogs are also allowed to eat strawberries. So there is nothing wrong with sharing them with your four-legged friend. As long as you don't give him so many strawberries that he gets stomach aches or diarrhoea, they are a healthy and tasty snack that most dogs can tolerate without any problems.

Regardless of this, strawberries are not a meal replacement for dogs and, despite their healthy ingredients, they do not provide your four-legged friend with all the necessary nutrients. Instead, your dog's diet must, of course, consist primarily of high-quality dog food, such as you will find in our shop.

Therefore, strawberries should only be seen as a small treat that you can give your dog in between meals, and you should otherwise rely on species-appropriate dry and wet food from Bellfor.
